Is it bi'dah or not?

On the authority of A’isha (radiyaAllahu ‘anha) who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“He who innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e. Islam] that is not of it will have it rejected [by Allah]”.

Reported by Bukhari and Muslim

In one narration by Muslim, it reads: “He who does an act which we have not commanded will have it rejected (by Allah)”.

"…The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire…"

Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578

"…Verily he among you who lives (long) will see great controversy, so you must keep to my sunnah and to the sunnah of the rightly-guided Rashidite Caliphs - cling to them stubbornly. Beware of newly invented matters, for every invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a going astray and every going astray is in Hell-fire."

Al Nawawi Hadis 28

It was perfectly fine until the wahhabists came along and decided nobody was allowed to have nice things.

Wahhabism is bid'ah.

I don't celebrate my own birthday either, but I don't care if other people do. You want to give me the hadith where Muhammad says not to commemorate his birth?

>He who does an act which we have not commanded will have it rejected (by Allah

Well, Allah didn't command you to make this thread, so I guess Allah has rejected it.

Mawlid goes back to the early days of Islam when some of the Tabi‘un began to hold sessions in which poetry and songs composed to honour Muhammad were recited and sung to the crowds. Your image is a lie.

That's what wahhabists do. They deceive, deliberately mistranslate, and spread mischeif.

Isn't bid'ah only restricted to ibadah?

Like the Sufi spinning top rituals, and Shia self-flagellation.

I doubt using toothbrush is bid'ah just because the prophet uses miswak.

Pretty much, yep. Innovation in religion is wrong. Having a cake on the Prophet's birthday isn't innovating the religion. There's just a small group of very angry people out there who believe that if the Prophet didn't do it, then we can't do it.

Well … the Prophet didn't live past 8 June 632, so I guess we're all screwed since we're still alive.

Mawlid is a period used to perform acts of adoration towards Allah like zikr, Qur'an recitals, and discussing the biography of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. These are all things that are halal and encouraged in Islam.

The only bi'dah is thinking it's afdal and you get extra Good Muslim Point™ praising The Prophet (pbuh) on the of Mawlid.
