What is the islamic view on Abortion? Is it permitted or forbidden?

It varies; but there seems to be a concession overall that abortion is permitted to the 4th month (120 days) of pregnancy. If the mother is in danger from the pregnancy, then abortion is permitted. It's also permitted in cases of severe fetal deformity.

If the women is pregnant because she sleeps with men out of wedlock, then it is haram. If the women is pregnant with his husband's seed, it is haram unless the fetus is endangering the life of the mother, only then is "permitted". That is so far that I know. I'm not too sure about rape though. Kinda interested to know about this now. Can another brother share any hadith regarding how islam handle rape cases? I'm sad to say despite being brought up as a muslim, I have almost no knowledge about this.

I don't find any exceptions for rape, the same rules apply, it's allowed for a younger than 40 day old fetus but disliked.

17:31 And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.

Prior to 120 days, the fetus is "potential life", not a child. Unless you follow Maliki, then all abortion is off the table.

I only provided relevant information from the Quran as OP requested. The verse simply says do not kill them for fear of poverty, there may be much more debate when it comes to rape, incest, etc. but the Quran is quite clear under that specific condition.

I'm just saying that having an abortion isn't necessarily killing a child, therefore 17:31 doesn't count.

I notice the islamqa uses the rationale for forty days as that is when the child becomes a clot. What is the rationale for 120 days?

abortion is haram (excluding the obvious times of exception, such as when mother's lfie is in danger), all fatwas (except liberal minority scholars) agree on this and most evidence points within the Islamic sources states that killing your spawn because of anything ranging from poverty to the sex/gender is wrong

also abortion is murder

>Stage 1 Nutfa (Sperm)

<This is the stage from conception to 40 days since the semen has fertilized the ovum. In this stage, Hanafites permit abortions, the majority of Shafites permit abortions, some Hanbalites permit it, but Malikites do not.

>Stage 2 Alaqa (Blood Clot)

<This is the stage 40-80 days after conception when the fertilized egg has become blod clot like. In this stage, Hanafites permit abortions, while only some Shafites and Hanbalites permit it.

>Stage 3 Mudgha (Embryo)

<This is the stage 80-120 days after conception where the blood clot has now formed into flesh. In this stage, Hanafites permit abortions, only some Shafites and Hanbalites permit it.

>Stage 4 Khalqan Akhar (Spirit)

<This is the stage 120 days after conception when based on Islam a soul/ spirit has entered the body. In the stage all 4 school of thoughts do not permit abortions.

fetus means offspring or little one.

when are you comfortable killing your offspring/little ones? If a man kicked my wife in the stomach causing her to abort the offspring, it would be murder, no matter the time period of gestation.

In English, yes. Did you not read >>33776 ? There are times in Islam where abortion is permitted no matter what your tender fee-fees believe.

>kicked my wife in the stomach causing her to abort

That's not the same thing.

After conception the genetic material is already in place that is coding your personality, physical features, mental faculties, etc. The person exists upon conception, there is no sense in setting an arbitrary point of time after conception, be it 1month, 2months, 12weeks, whatever.

Either you accept the person exists upon conception or you fall into relativism.

Where did you get this "120 days" stuff? Afaik, abortion is only permitted within 40 days and with valid shari' reason; not on whims.

You don't personally get to decide what is moral. If a person obeys God, they are moral. Outside of that, it is nothing more than personal feelings.
