Salam aleikum.
I'm a guy in my mid-20's who have been suffering from depression and anxiety for a long time. It got so bad that it cost me my friendships, my family and nearly my life. The dark clouds have started to part and I feel like I'm ready to finally move on with my life, but I have to pretty much start from scratch and it's proving really difficult. I'm struggling to find any meaning at all and it feels hopeless trying to connect with people because everyone in my age have started settling down or have firmly stablished groups of friends already. I've been looking towards philosophy and religion trying to get new perspectives and trying to find a path forward - and Islam really caught my eye as something that could be worth pursuing. I feel like it's wrong on some level though since it's for such selfish reasons as wanting to get myself together.
Do you have any advice for me or how I should proceed? Is it okay for me to convert? If I do, what can I expect? If I end up converting I'm planning on immersing myself completely as there's nothing of value in my life as it is right now. I apologize for my poor writing skills and english by the way, I know they're crap.

I converted to Islam and looking back at the way I was thinking and the things I was doing before I became Muslim, I was completely ignorant and heedless. Don’t worry about converting for the reason of trying to improve you own mental situation. As long as you are sincere, after a while you will start to feel better Insha Allah.
Just read the Quran, learn how to pray and try to find some good Muslims to be around and learn from. Don’t get discouraged if you run into some bad people. The only real important thing is to accept the truth of Islam, and to try to apply it in your life the best that you can.

Everything with by intention, purify your intention, that it's to seek the truth, ask for God to help you and guide you step by step. I suggest reading the quran first. Many translations are available in the settings on quran.com

That's not selfish at all, that existential feeling is in all humans, only by remembering our creator and worshiping him can we find peace.

First you have to read the Qu'ran, and contemplate the passages. If you've read it in it's entirety, and understand it, then practice living as a Muslim for a week or so.
If you're still interested after all this, go to a Mosque and convert.

Bud, we all need God, whether you are aware of it or not. Trying to get closer to him is not selfish in the least. However, you should build your belief slowly, and don't hastily convert to a religion you know nothing about.

Read the Qu'ran, try living as a Muslim. If you have trouble understanding the Qu'ran either talk to an Imam or search around online. After this life as a Muslim for at least a week.

Everything we do is ultimately selfish even if it's uncomfortable to think about. It's about obtaining enlightened selfishness otherwise you spend your life flailing around trying to figure out how to manage the suffering inherent to the human condition. Immerse yourself in Islam and trace the history back, you may find some serious philosophical truths that you weren't expecting in the Quran and previous scriptures.

Sahih International
[5:78] Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.
[5:79] They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing.
[5:80] You see many of them becoming allies of those who disbelieved. How wretched is that which they have put forth for themselves in that Allah has become angry with them, and in the punishment they will abide eternally.
[5:81] And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient.
[5:82] You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah ; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant.
“So, because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them and made their hearts grow hard. They change the words from their (right) places and have abandoned a good part of the Message that was sent to them. And you will not cease to discover deceit in them, except a few of them”
[al-Maa’idah 5:13]
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) described them well when he said:
“The nation upon whom is the Divine wrath are the Jews, the people of lies, slander, betrayal, conspiracy and trickery, the killers of Prophets and consumers of ribaa (usury) and bribes. They have the most evil hearts of all nations, and the worst attitude. They are the farthest removed from (divine) Mercy and the closest to (divine) wrath. Their way is enmity and stirring up hatred. They represent the house of witchcraft, lies and trickery. They do not see anything wrong in rejecting and disbelieving in Prophets whom they did not like. With regard to a believer, they respect not the ties, either of kinship or of covenant [cf. Al-Tawbah 9:10]. They do not respect the rights of those who agree with them, or show any compassion towards them, nor do they show any justice or fairness to those who work with them. There is no safety or security for those who mix with them, and there is no sincerity towards those who use their services. The most evil of them is the one who is most intelligent, and the cleverest one among them is the one who cheats the most. The one who is good at heart – which it is unlikely to find among them – is not a Jew in any real sense. They are the most bad-tempered of people, with the gloomiest houses and the filthiest courtyards. They have very bad manners – their greeting is a curse, and meeting them is bad news. Their slogan is wrath and they are filled with hatred.”
