"Beta" is acceptable, but doesn't really apply. Humans don't have an alpha/beta society. We're not wolves. As a matter of fact, human society has always encouraged "beta"-like behavior. While the "alpha" males of ancient human tribes were off getting killed while hunting dangerous beasts, the "beta" males were staying back home and impregnating the females.

It's most commonly used euphemistically with "spineless and lacking basic self-respect or dignity", I think this usage is acceptable. "Pushover" just lacks bite imo, like saying someone's too agreeable.
