No, they're completely separate. EO games do take place in the future, however.
Strange Journey just used the same engine as EO, so the gameplay is a similar style. No mapmaking though, which is a little sad.
As for the used stores, I haven't been to any of them lately. But pooling my cash for some switch releases next month.

I might get one in a couple years, I don't think I've ever got a console even close to launch. I just picked up the PS4 like two weeks ago.

I have a thing for buying nintendo handhelds at launch.
Zelda, SMT, and xenoblade got me excited.
And the inevitable monster hunter game is going to be great, I hope.
That's a smart move, there's really no reason to buy one right now.
A lot of the niche DS games are starting to skyrocket in price, it's a little sad.

Actually, that's a good point, handhelds are different. I was at a midnight release for the Monster Hunter 4 New 3DS.
It really is sad, the DS has a very very nice library.

I bought the grey new 3ds as well as the special edition of monhun 4.
DS has a great library. Has some of my favorite kirby games on it. Lots of interesting RPGs too, like Radiant Historia, and Covenant of the Plume.
It might just be hindsight, but I feel like it had a much better selection than the 3ds ended up with.

Knights in the nightmare was an interesting one, too! And it had the rune factory games, and Megaman ZX! I've never heard of Covenant of the Plume. It definitely had more gems than the 3DS did.

I haven't heard of knights.
I could never get into rune factory, but I'm not a harvest moon fan either.
The megman starforce games were pretty alright, too.
I remember seeing a really interesting 3ds game really early in it's lifespan, Kanata's Labyrinth (?) that got me really excited. I never heard of it again, I think it didn't get localized. I think that's what happened to many of the more obscure 3ds games, they just never came out over here.
