This album came out 40 years ago this month. Let's have an anniversary thread.

This has always been the hardest Genesis album for me to get into, but I wonder if anyone else here has different thoughts.

If nothing else, it's a fascinating album, unlike anything Genesis did before or would do since. It's an interesting quirk how the album doesn't have a single song exceeding ten minutes, yet that doesn't make the songs (with a couple obvious exceptions) more commercial, but rather more concise. Every song is completely different from each other, which unfortunately means the album doesn’t really have an identity or a coherent, overarching feel. Even the album cover is bizarre; to this day, I still can’t even decipher what is supposed to be happening on it.

It's a lot like Tormato by Yes, which incidentally came out in the same year, in multiple ways. Tormato has the same identity crisis with weird songs — none of which exceeding ten minutes — that feel like they're trying to be a little commercial but end up being quite experimental. It even has an ATTWT-esque cover where I don't know what the hell is going on. And both bands went on mini-hiatuses after these albums.

The Lady Lies is the only song on the album I would really put on a favorite Genesis songs list. I guess Down and Out might be on there too. The weird thing is, it's not like I outright dislike the other songs except for Follow You Follow Me and Snowbound (though I love the dark premise behind Snowbound's story). The songs have a high floor but a low ceiling. Genesis has made a lot worse, but they've made so much better.

I just finished side one of the album, from my beaten Atlantic LP copy I inherited from my dad. The thing about Genesis albums from the period, during that period, was that they cram 50+ minutes worth of music on a single disc, which is possible by mastering it quietly and putting it through compression filters. The end result doesn't sound good, add the crinkles of the worn LP on top of the relatively quiet album. Today, when an album that even lasts just 50 minutes is pressed to vinyl, it's split into two discs. I'm now listening to the 2012 LP reissue of Destroyer's Rubies, and despite being only 19 seconds longer than And Then There Were Three, is split in two and generally sounds much better, disregarding that my copy was barely used compared to ATTWT. If one thinks 19 seconds decides whether the album is split, Duke clocks in at 55 minutes and is crammed on one disc.

I could argue that Genesis is one of the few rock bands of the 70s-80s that sounds better on CD than LP. They were too ambitious for the cost-cutting standards of record companies at the time. Their albums could have been split to two discs, but it would have been too costly for a mainstream record label in a time where LP was the standard format, and during an energy crisis, no less.

I have an original Charisma pressing of A Trick of the Tail I purchased for £15 during my visit to England back in November 2016, and it sounds truly incredible, especially for what they had to work with. A big thing may also have to do that they recorded AToTT at Trident Studios and ATTWT was recorded at Relight Studios. Drastically changes the sound for me.

I would still recommend the LPs of Genesis for most people, if only because the various CD reissues can vary horribly in quality. The original 80s CDs are the best if you can get your hands on them, followed by the 90s CDs which use the same masters as the LPs, but the 2007 remasters are just plain terrible. Unfortunately, the 2007 CDs are what are the most prevalent. At least you know what you're getting with the LPs, and I actually like those original masters quite a lot.

You probably are right. The brittleness of the 2007 remixes doesn't really settle with me. When I was listening to ATTWT earlier on LP today I noticed the wealth of dynamic range, especially the pronounced gated drums transitioning to the pre-chorus on "Undertow", was greater than the 2007 mix I've been listening to on-and-off through Spotify. It's the unfortunate reality of the old LP's quiet and canny mastering that exemplified my copy's scars and warts another album in a similar condition wouldn't reveal. Finding a mint LP copy of a Genesis album is a strong choice and a great alternative than a download or CD from the 2007 masters. I have one of those budget reissues of Trespass from the early-80s on MCA Records and I can't really complain about its condition and quality.

I found an Atlantic CD of Duke in a favorite Virginia record store pressed in 1990, based on the 80s Charisma CD masters. I've heard that pressing has an error where the stereo channels are reversed from normal. I can probably put on my headphones the other way, and Duke doesn't really play into stereo gimmicks like albums in the 70s did.

To be honest my opinion on this album is a bit mixed, there are some songs i love (Down and Out, Undertow, Snowbound, Burning Rope, Deep in the Motherlode and The Lady Lies), some songs i don't mind or dont really care about (Follow You Follow Me, Say It's Alright Joe, Many too Many, Ballad of Big) and then one song i skip by default (Scenes from a Night's Dream), it just feels somewhat underwhelming seeing how it came out inbetween 2 of my favorite Collins era albums.

Also, this is off topic but Tony released his new classical orchestra album last month, its called "Five" and seemingly one of the pieces is inspired by an old Genesis song.

One thing i forgot to mention is that i also love the sound this album, Tony's first solo album and Duke had, the late 70's early 80's synths like the ARP Quadra and the CS80 and most of all that CP70 which sounded great on every song it was used, and excluding A Curious Feeling for obvious reasons, the drums sounded huge and also added a alot to the sound those 2 albums had, although that's more noticeable on Duke.

I've always loved the sound of the Yamaha CP-70, but I never realized what the model and make of that keyboard was until just now. It has such a pretty and cute sound.

I've also modified a well-known tune around these parts to make it sound like a Tony Banks solo on the CP70 circa 1978 to 1980. I was pretty surprised how good it sounds.

I'm attempting to organize a playlist that ultimately becomes an expanded version of And Then There Were Three. There are connections to Tony Banks' solo work from around the period to modern-day. Also some tracks from the Undertale soundtrack serve as interludes. Here's the sequencing at the moment. Suggestions are welcome.

1. Renaissance (Tony Banks, Five)

2. Down and Out

3. From the Undertow (Tony Banks, A Curious Feeling)

4. Undertow

5. Ballad of Big

6. Snowy (Toby Fox)

7. Snowbound

8. Burning Rope

9. For a While (Tony Banks, A Curious Feeling)

10. Deep in the Motherlode

11. Many Too Many

12. The Waters of Lethe (Tony Banks, A Curious Feeling)

13. Scenes from a Night's Dream

14. The Day the Light Went Out (B-side)

15. Long Elevator (Toby Fox)

16. Say It's Alright Joe

17. Vancouver (B-side)

18. Barrier (Toby Fox)

19. The Lady Lies

20. Memory (Toby Fox)

21. Follow You Follow Me

I've also debated putting in "Inside and Out" because it was the American B-side to "Follow You Follow Me," but it was ultimately from the Wind and Wuthering era and featured Steve Hackett.

I revisited the record store I've talked about at >>426 and they had this. A Japanese Super High Material CD of the 2007 ATTWT. This was the only copy they had of the album at the store then, and there is very little info out there with regards to this pressing, other that it was a limited run and is now OOP. This SHM-CD goes for at least $40 online and I managed to snag it for an even lower price at the store.

As far as sound quality goes, this is the best version of the 2007 remix I've ever heard, as far as ATTWT goes, but then again, it's the 2007 remix, not the original 1978 mix which I found unimpressive on the Atlantic LP I mentioned at >>424. I never heard the recent LP reissues cut from the remixes which were supposedly free of the "loudness war." My SHM-CD of "And Then..." doesn't reduce the dynamic range compression of Spotify's copy, but there is more detail and transparency all-around, even when comparing Spotify's lossy to the SHM-CD rip compressed to lossy. I don't know how it compares to a lossless CD rip of the US or UK 2007 standard CDs, though, but nonetheless a cool find.

Just a little update. The revised sequencing has "Scenes From a Night's Dream" and "The Day the Light Went Out" reversed in order. "Renaissance" is moved in between "Snowbound" and "Burning Rope." Add "Prelude to a Million Years" to the beginning before "Down and Out." I feel it's more concise this way and listened to it in that order several times over the weekend. It's probably the best Genesis album never made.

Pretty underrated album, even by the guys from Genesis.

Found this hodgepodge concert video of "Burning Rope," my personal favorite from the album.
