I have a hypothesis (not that I can test it…) about twitter "needing" us shitlords to generate controversy, which leads to interactions, which drives traffic, which leads to eyeballs looking at ads, which is twitter's real form of revenue generation (and selling customer data to consultants which resell that data to advertisers). Which is why there hasn't been mass-bannings for wrongthink, just some oddly-targeted individual bannings for crossing an invisible anti-progressive line that is never publicly defined.

If this hypothesis follows through, twitter's oh-so-progressive management HATE #GG with a passion, but NEED us because if twitter becomes a progressive echochamber like NeoGaf, they're DONE social media platform, and someone else will naturally step-up and eat their lunch.

I was wondering, is there any alternatives out there for twitter or is all forms of social media doom to fail after several years?

I think your hypothesis holds. Just look at how they are not banning Azealia Banks even after she threatened Palin, and they have never banned ISIS. They depend on shitstorms to survive. Without them, there is no point to being on twitter.

Is there any particular explanation as to why Twitter isn't making much money to begin with?

Selling it was the optimal move for him, as was Conde Nast buying plebbit. It's an active mouthpiece on the internet, and when you control it, you get one free "I CONTROL THE STORY" card on a media disaster of your choosing, and a few extra uses after that with diminishing returns. It doesn't make money directly, but it's still a value space on the Monopoly board of the internet.

After seeing the failure of containing the Zoe Quinn 5 Guys story though, I question the ability to truly control the narrative, although I'm saying that while typing on my alternative filipino cave painting offshoot when my normie friends still instantly associate the term "Gamergate" with some women getting death threats when it's brought up at a diner meal. So it sort of works?

It's the model that is uses- crippling overspecialization, as it were. Twitter has long prided itself on being 'fast', 'concise', 'quick', whatevs. The thing is, that doesn't make for a great business model for ad revenue, and that's where it's losing against Facebook. Facebook can keep people on the site for hours, where Twitter can't. Messages are only 140 characters. Not a lot of important things can be clearly conveyed in that, without losing something somewhere.

Facebook is decent for followings friends, family, and companies/websites, while Tumblr handles everything else in interests, hobbies, and fandoms. Twitter was doomed to failure once those two became the staples. Facebook and Tumblr don't need controversy or happenings to keep the activity flowing- Twitter dries up without it.

The funny thing is that I think it's actually a good normalfag solution for sports discussion. It's the closest thing they have to /sp/ gamethreads; short, trite messages that can be quickly read and responded to. They could find a niche there like Myspace found a niche in music to keep it alive and profitable to this day.
