I looked at some of their streams and IRC logs, and they're filled with irrelevant bullshit that I'd rather not be bothered to sift through.

It depends on the IRCfag but the answer will generally be unrelated material trying to string together loose ideas. The base usually has some merit but it then goes too tinfoil to be useful. Take the early digs on DiGRA: Some of it was useful and helped understand the ways academia has been trying to get involved with video games, influence it, and push it in certain directions away from the market. Yet early on people distanced themselves from it more and more because it shifted away from that to how it's all paid by DARPA who has tangible connections to people who have connections to Silverstring Media, so it's a government attack on video games. They ended up poisoning the well for months with that but eventually the focus got to realign to just staying to clear, direct, influences.
Same happened with the S4T dig that tried to paint Bill Gates as the mastermind of everything and was somehow connecting common core to it. The clearer, direct focus there to video games, Mcintosh and Mimi Ito, was completely overshadowed despite people saying to just focus on that, and now it's mostly just obscure data because they kept adding more poison to the well every time they went for it.
I don't remember the RAND stuff with Zan very well but it never took off or resulted in anything, which isn't that unusual. Zan digs mostly focus heavily on conspiracy theories and trying to establish government connections so don't expect much. Kelly doesn't actually dig, he just gets in the way of anything that could be productive and actively tries to ruin things in ways where he can maintain plausible deniability, allowing him to do it again.
If you want a brief summary of it, IRCfag digs are a mix of autism and tinfoil with no filter in between to tell you what's useful data and what's junk.

Every so often in my travels I bump into ancient websites that somehow still have an active domain. Like, vintage-1999 sites. Long dead of course, with the latest posts or updates from like 2000-2002 and so forth.
The net was such a different world back then, and so much better than this one. You can see it in posts on ancient forums - just the way people used to talk and converse. It was at once innocent and intellectual, and even the humor was more high-brow. The net wasn't one monolithic Megacity the way it is now - each community was a self-sufficient island, connected to others by trade routes and banner ads, and separated by vast seas of lawless digital space. Each place had their own culture, their own mores, and there was no law or desire for law.
There was freedom and exploration. And if you've never typed a random plausible-sounding URL into your browser just to see if you'd actually land on a website and not a 404 page, you're not an oldfag.
I think that's the reason I still like imageboards so much. They're like little pockets of that tradition, right down to the rivalry with other big sites Reddit that still have a little bit of flavor to them.
I miss when the Internet was a separate world that you logged on to visit. Not this omnipresent, bland, normalfag and commercial dominated pile of shit that tastes more like interactive waiting-room television than a world unto itself.

This is especially obvious now. Just look at the threads. Shit like "+1 UID." where were they when they had 20 a few weeks ago. Of course, it's 1 post per IP, because it's the same few people on a VPN spouting the same bullshit as if people believe it's true.
The current narrative is we don't want Alison Rapp nudes or that mods deleted nudes. I can explain that, I'm the mod who deleted the post with the nudes. The reason why is because when I attempted to spoiler the unspoilered nudes, it created an overflow error because Hotwheel's site is being held together by duct tape. This is a good time as ever to mention shit like this and pic related. I've seen this a million times, the phrase "won't get users back no matter how many we ban" etc. Point is, the people we ban are often the same people: people with VPNs who troll using them by saying GG is dead or some other bullshit about GGHQ. I don't give a shit about user history until they spam up the place or advertise a link. But I can safely say most of the people I have personally banned (that weren't spam links or cp) were using a VPN to post. They have no posting history or anything that would back them up. So basically their ban does nothing because we know they will be back soon anyway.
So then you ask "why do you ban" or "what's the point" and the point is both inconvenience and the principle of it. Once they are banned they usually take it as a hint and leave for some time to try again later, or they use it to garner more circlejerk fake pity as they pretend to be different people with each ban message posted.
But the real reason is it trips their UID autism. They aren't so ready to just come here and shit up the place when they need to change their IP and give us a new UID. I personally don't give a shit about UID but this is pretty much all they cared about since day 1 so it acts as a deterrent. Just look at the shit they pulled with the Rapp situation, artificially boosted UIDs which crashed 3 days later as anticipated.
So for example, pic related was the only post on that IP, which points to a VPN. They will be back and probably are back. But eventually their UID autism will get the best of them and they will just stop posting altogether. Or they won't and our UIDs go up, which will annoy them too. Win-win for us.

All while ignoring that they were the mod staff for /gg/ and /gamergate/, and that they actively chose to step aside because even they realized at the time that it wasn't working. They revise a lot while omitting that the biggest problem was always their fighting between themselves that was the problem. Things got out of hand, fucked with everything, and then they blame everyone else and DARVO to sound as if things were great.

This is one of the key health checks you can have with any large group of people. Political faggots will come in, burrow a hole into your cause, and kill it from within. They don't accept that every movement or revolt has certain base values that give it the power and numbers it needs, they simply focus on just the political support and opponents. Occupy needed Wall Street as its focus and once that was lost, it died. GamerGate needs video games as its focus and these people have repeatedly tried to do the same to it. That's why it was important that nobody became overly political and accepted the wide variety of beliefs: it kept the base value as the necessary core value.
Keep in mind, there's a difference between political faggots and people who value the politics more. Milo cares more for politics but he understood that the subject was video games. He did not come at this from a different angle like feminism, he came at it with video games and games journalism in mind. Sommers did come at it from a clear feminist angle yet still kept the focus on video games. She made multiple videos over what feminists were saying about video games and gamers. Both are professional political activists who understand that you don't erode the base as that erodes its power. Political faggots completely ignore this and just go for different targets for an entirely different base and that's why they will always fail. Roosh had a site for GG and it didn't last a year. Why? Because nobody wants to put up with his faggotry. Same for Craig Brittain. Same for David Draiman.
