I'd love to hear some suggestions about lightweight and reliable Linux distro to use as a base for fw. Will set it up using smoothwall. Planned Debian, but not very sure about it.

LEDE is what you're looking for if you have limited storage capacity and very little RAM (embedded devices, consumer "routers", things like the rPi)

OpenBSD also works wonderfully as a firewall solution. Their developers maintain OpenSSH, LibreSSL, pf and a bunch of other mission critical software.
