patreon has now decided to charge people who pledges small donations.

how will this affect the following? artists, pledgers, and patreon.

what does fur think of this?

is patreon shooting themselves in the foot with this is this more of a "fatal" shot?

 No.56515

It's simple: small donators will donate more, then "creators" will write lengthy sob stories about how this new policy is putting them in financial difficulties and is forcing them off their lazy asses to find a real job, so everyone will increase their pledges overall and the cycle of "talentless waste of human life earns a living by writing about how much of a creative person they wish they were" can continue.

What? Did you think this would've spelled death for shitreon? HAHAHAH, you're a funny guy, you. Poor bloggers need mo' money fo' dat hypercar, yo tbh fam smh.

 No.56522>>56556

The site will eventually crumble. They will be forced to enforce the porn & copyright rules eventually, forcing 2/3 of their users away.

Likewise people are going to get sick of

>I drew art, I deserve money

>give me money so I can buy toys I mean make more Youtube video reviews

and stop donating when they realize they're funding what is basically giving people welfare without the government middle man.

I'm not kidding on that one part, there are Youtube people who literally use their money to buy action figures and video games and openly admit it, under the guise of "content creation" because they... make a shitty video review of the damn thing.

 No.56524>>56556

Not so much fatal for Patreon itself, but a lot of furry artists relying on the "even if it's just one dollar, they add up" principle are getting shafted. Tricksta did a big sob-post, for one.

Reading into the actual reasoning behind the change in fee just makes the company seem stupid, since they're doing a bunch of individual transactions rather than bulk ones for a pay-per-month/update site. It'd almost be easier to say "here, give us fifty bucks and you'll get fifty ~patreon dollars~ to spend on whatever creator you want, for however long you want", but that'd also impact the bottom line by seeming like less of a microtransaction and more of a blunt purchase.

Either way, hope it all burns down.

srs question here

besides growing a pair or whatever, what does the artist who's on patreon to minimize contact with cheapskate assholes do? i foundover time that the biggest bitches are the people getting stuff for cheap/free. people who have to put their money where their mouth is are generall nicer, even if its just $1.

still posting art for free but it was nice having a place to put stuff people threw a shit fit over and if someone wanted to bitch at least i got $1 out ofit. wat do nao? draw less, just stop? legit want your thoughts /fur/

No, you're wrong. Websites that aren't deeply entrenched like facebook and youtube, that provide a basic service that anyone can replicate, can and DO die out from bad moves like this. Many artists are already abandoning ship for platforms that do a similar thing, like ko-fi. The artists will continue doing what they're doing; they'll just find somewhere else to do it.

>>56524

The problem for Patreon and MANY other websites is that advertisements just don't pay enough to keep the service going anymore. Too many people are using adblockers, and will complain if the ads are obtrusive. They can either charge fees to use their site, or do what discord does and sell your fucking data. This is an issue that is going to affect a lot of smaller websites in the near future, and there really isn't any solution.

>The artists will continue doing what they're doing; they'll just find somewhere else to do it.

And, that is what concerns me. Will artists continue to paywall or recognize that these alternative services are not the exact same as Patreon and release their 'exclusive' content more freely?

They're putting the gun to their head and screaming angrily. Loads of people would love to copy Patreon. Easy way to get loads of money.

Don't they already charge by, you know, taking 10%?

 No.56721

This'll certainly get people to stop donating small amounts, and just as well, it'll mean some just say 'Screw it' and simply stop donating.

If it's more of the latter, then congrats Patreon, you're even more pointless to use.

>i foundover time that the biggest bitches are the people getting stuff for cheap/free

Are you trying to imply that it's better to be a Tooled Autist that throws too much money at people?

 No.56724>>56746 >>56790

The problem is that every artist suddenly acts as if their art is on the level of the Renaissance painters and that they DESERVE money just for making it. That's not how commerce works. You make money if there is a demand not because you exist.

And yes, if someone is giving you $1 and you act as if they're a piece of shit for it, they should cancel that dollar because you're a greedy prick who doesn't appreciate it.

 No.56768>>56790

I don't give to Patreon because fuck these people. They act like they deserve money for doing shit, and for every one that pulls this there are still 9 that distribute free content. They are not unique enough to demand money.

It's worse when it's non-popufurs doing this, as if the $30 a month you make- before Patreon and Paypal take their cut- really amounts to dick.

 No.56769

People will just switch to another platform. Know Sargon recently jumped to another site (though he's not a furry artist).

 No.56790>>56810 >>56821 >>56826

Why do people like you get so upset over this? It is a free market, they are free to set up a Patreon and their potential patreons are free to decide if it's worth paying for the returns on offer. I don't understand they the thought of someone attempting to get paid for work done is so triggering to some people. Surely you aren't so desperate for furry porn that the free art you can find anywhere isn't enough?

>>56707

They changed the fees they charge to 2.9% of the pledged amount plus a flat amount of $0.35 per pledge, so if you pledged $100 to one artist you'd get charged $103.25 (the artist would get 95% of that I think) but if you pledged $1 to 100 artists you'd be charged $138 bascially.

 No.56809

Liberapay? Its a free and open source donation platform that respects your privacy more than ko-fi or Patreon. I don't plan on getting a Patreon ever.

 No.56810>>56826

>>56790

I don't believe in supporting artists that restrict what you can do with their art, outside of assigning credit.

 No.56821

>>56790

>It is a free market

No, it's not. That's a complete delusion. The free-market hasn't existed for a century, ever since the government started allowing most businesses to self-regulate and form monopolies to the detriment of the consumer. It's going to be really funny when Google or Disney builds a Patreon clone, and then uses the new deconstructed net neutrality to push their site into prominence above all others, and no new ones can ever be founded because they'll be buried behind throttling and censoring.

And your dumb ass will still insist that you're "free".

 No.56826>>56835

>>56790

It's because they act as if they are owed money simply for doing art, that's now how supply & demand works, yet these artists act like they're owed money because they breathe air.

>>56810

On the other hand you have this moronic liberal asshole, who thinks artists shouldn't own property and that "art belongs to the world". He is a retard that thinks he's owed free entertainment because he breathes air.

Patreon is funded by their "cut" of their creator's donations, not advertising. Though if there are ads, I'm blissfully unaware with adblock.

They just now recently said they aren't going through with the change.

 No.56887

>>56886

That didn't take long. I heard they were dead set on keeping the changes, but I guess enough people jumped ship to MakerSupport to make them change their minds.

I would hope that there's plans to implement MakerSupport posts to yiff.party since some artists are likely not moving back to Patreon, but will continue to paywall.

 No.56892>>56894

Might be too little, too late. A good number of artists and patrons might already have run off, and won't come back. This is why companies should have focus groups composed of something other than rich old fuckers who have no love for anything other than money. Any idiot you pulled off the street could have told them this would backfire.
