It really depends on the context, but it CAN'T be racist, only disparaging via historical reference. It's similar to the word "boy": has perfectly acceptable definitions, but when used to refer to a black man in a condescending tone, it's insulting or at the very least insensitive.

On its own, out of context, it isn't a slur, though, because it has other definitions that usually supersede it. Like the word "cracker" when used to refer to white people. No white people get pissed off when someone starts talking about goddamn saltines.

If I hear "coon" in the furry community I immediately think of raccoons. It's a word I personally have never heard someone called the term irl

Context matters, it clearly is referring to raccoon and not a slur. I know a guy who had "coon" as part of his profile name and he was bullied into shutting down his FA and renaming himself to satisfy these lunatics.

Context is important and there shouldn't be any word that is just evil at all times under any circumstances no matter what the intentions of using it may have been.

I'd find it EXTREMELY unlikely that someone could have gotten to adulthood, having by that point seen literally tens of thousands of people in passing, and never once saw one walk by and thought "Oh, I want to fuck that!" unless they were actually asexual. Pretty sure when it gets to that point, it's just never going to happen, especially when people who aren't asexual get that thought for the first time around age ten or eleven.

People don't want to be called what they are.

People called homosexuals homos because that's just what they fucking are, homos. Being associated with that word made it a bad word and now homos don't want to be associated with their bad reputation anymore.

It's exactly like those "ban bossy" or "Bitch is sexist" campaigns in which a group doesn't want to be associated with it's own negativity. Thing is they perceive the negativity as coming from the word and not from the group itself.
