I didn't know it was a thing until much later. I saw people drawing animal characters in Scratchpad (Lunchtimers oekaki) and I liked them so I drew them too. Having your own character was a common way to identify yourself, so I made one back then.

I didn't consciously make a "fursona" until I found Tegaki E though and saw people "blogging" with furry OCs.

To answer the original question: I'm an oddball in that I didn't start using the internet until I was about 15 or 16. I was one of the weird kids who played outside. I discovered furry from google images, and that brought me to 4chan for the fur threads.

I still remember the first furry porn image that I saw. It was a picture of a male and a female racoon having sex in a bathroom, titled something like "bathroom break" or something. I remember being weirded out, then aroused.

2013, me, discovering the furry fandom and see that it's pretty much the same thing, but free of any series and a concept, more than a fandom.

That's pretty much it. But since I'm european, the community for my country is way more cancerous and full of dramas. So, I ditched all of it and right now, my only direct contact with the "fandom" is 8/fur/, 8/furry/, F-list and some furry Discord servers.

I'd love to see a /fur/-related server, but I don't think it would be a great idea.

I didn't start calling myself a furry til many years later but looking back one of the indications I pretty much always was one was seeing this cutscene for the first time as a kid.

I was searching for fiction on the web when I was 8 or 9 or 10 or so, because I was running out of things to read at the library.

I looked on the now-dead Google Web Directory and found a site with a long list of (fantasy/scifi?) fiction which was published on the web.

(Most of it wasn't furry.)

The things I read from that site had a huge impact on my personality. Mostly positive, I think.

Given that this was web fiction, I think it may have been more contrarian and weird than the typical mainstream published fiction.

In particular, one thing I read was "The Human Memoirs".

Been into furry shit for a while, started really with The Lion King, started browsing TLK:FAA around 2002 or 2003, eventually stumbled upon furry shit (knowing the phrase from the MTV special), started getting that (and some zoo shit, which I was also interested in even before the furry shit), at a friend's house.

Got my own DSL connection around 2005, got pretty much anything I could from Direct Connection hubs. Been passively lurking since. Like others here, don't go by the sparkle-dog line of thought to being a furry, just have a love of animals (more than most), and was always interested in good art of animals, and there's plenty of good artists that can draw in this fandom, so I stuck around.

"Playing pretend" was something for little kids, anyway; grew out of that sort of thing by the time we were 10-11. A universe that has its genesis in fanfiction never stops being fanfiction. You can change the characters, try and change the themes or tone, change whatever you want, but you can't undo the fact that it started as a kid's fantasy based on a cartoon show. It's fundamentally still that. You can't retcon it away. All you're doing is adding a skyscraper on top of a foundation that was made to hold a playhouse; eventually it's going to collapse in on itself.

Trust me on this, anon. I've been through the same thing. In my late teens I came up with an extensive plot for a comic book I was going to draw with some friends, in an extremely anime style. I eventually restyled the whole thing into a plot more befitting a long novel, but the problem was that it was still kiddy shit. It was still an extremely convoluted alternate-universe (with original characters) shounen anime fanfiction. You could take any of the themes or characters or plot points and stick them into Naruto and it wouldn't seem out of place. Oh, and I tried to rework the characters so they weren't so trope-y, tried to make the plot more "adult" by adding in darkness and edginess, tried to make the themes more about overcoming internal demons and social adversity than a simple black-and-white power struggle between the good guys and bad guys... but none of it worked. It still felt like anime. It now just seemed like I'd ripped characters and plot points out of real novels and put them into Naruto. Worst of both worlds. Eventually, I had to scrap the entire thing (literally years of work and worldbuilding) and start from scratch. I got to reuse some of the characters and the very basics of the plot, but it's going to be a while before there's enough to actually make something worth writing about again. It won't be nearly the same thing.

Now, if your only intention is to just fuck around and have fun with a silly universe you have nostalgia for, until you reach middle age and drop all creativity like most people do, by all means: go ahead. Just realize that you're going to look at all that shit ten years from now and cringe, and silently hope it got deleted from wherever you posted it. "Rabbit with a fire-sword", and such. But if you're actually serious about creating an enduring adult universe (that is actually mature and not just teenager edgy), you should start something from scratch instead of adding onto this one thing all the time, and hoping the cartoon tropes and themes don't spread into it like a cancer.

Basically, you can't make a kid's story into an adult one just by adding

To point, really I don't want you to waste yourself. If you started as a little kid coming up with this big fanfiction universe, you're a good decade ahead of the average "creative" person, looking at a metaphorical creative intelligence; where a "CQ" of 100 is writing My Little Pony smut and 180 is Tolkien, you'd be like 150-ish. You're several standard deviations above the average already, and with a potential for more. But the longer you cling to this silly little universe you made as a child, the longer it's going to hold you back. The universe that was built to hold cartoon characters and naive worldviews and simple plots is going to demand that you keep creating things like that, you'll be creating inferior things simply because they "fit" into what you've already made. Oh sure, it'll keep getting better over time, but slowly. You will end up losing that advantage you started with as a child and trend to mediocrity.

It's just like with realistic artwork: you have to start with the proper fundamentals. Just because you've been drawing things since elementary school doesn't mean a thing if it's all childish symbolic interpretations. All that's happened is you've become extremely talented at sugarcoating really flawed artwork; you can draw beautifully rendered people that have rubber skeletons and uncanny-valley anatomy. In reality, you'll quickly fall behind someone who didn't start drawing until college, but who learned how to do things correctly from their first day. At some point, you're going to have to realize that you've been doing it wrong (because you didn't know any better) and now have to start from the bottom again if you want to exceed your current level. If you have talent, it will be a much quicker path than for most, but that doesn't change that it's one you have to go down.

You don't listen very well, when I told you that by middle school I left Tiny Toons behind I thought you would get the hint. You did not so I responded with the bait pic.

I've already been through everything you typed up years ago and started from scratch more than once depending on the story. The only lasting effect Tiny Toons had on me was the appeal to unnatural colors, and that's true for effecting all of the entire furry fandom in general. Before the Tiny Toons era people wouldn't even think about having a blue or pink rabbit, or a purple skunk ect. Disney or Warner animal characters were much more natural fur colored. So in effect Tiny Toons was the proto-sparkledogs but thank god I skipped the later sparkledog trend entirely. When I started to take art classes then even the rainbow spectrum of fur colors lost a lot of appeal unless it's got a purpose like color theory and good design. Hint: neon glow furshit like the radioactive nuclear-furry in Wolfynails art is even dumber and childish than the original Tiny Toons cast and horrifically bad design.

Tiny Toons LARPing is what got my gears going as a kid but that's well in the past and it's just something funny for me to look back on, and even then it wasn't fanfiction like I'm 1 person typing up everything in the dark when it was very organic bouncing ideas back and forth in real time. You're right there was PLENTY of cringe which is why retcons, redos and new universes happen. Still does not change the fact that I would likely not care about world building if I didn't branch off Tiny Toons to my own world as a kid, and get my friends heavily invested in it, the organic style of LARPing branched into RPs and a lot of times story lines would carryover and we would go back and forth between LARP and RP, the main tool was to use the imagination and that was the same. I always enjoy "channeling" the characters as I get invested in them. I still remember actually tearing up as I RPed a character in a sad heart breaking scene.

For the first universe, I have my own reasons in the lore why there's a rabbit associated with fire but that's a non-issue because if I showed it to you before talking about the Tiny Toons thing then you would never know how it started with a little kids dumb imagination. Picking out any ounce of Tiny Toons from it when theres maybe 2 or 3 characters that are loosely based off them (you can base characters off personality traits as well it doesn't have to be a carbon copy) out of 100 is beyond unlikely. It doesn't take place in the Tiny Toons universe by any stretch and characters were rewritten or redesigned from the ground up, so it's not fan fiction.

Sorry but you're wasting your breath trying to act like you're giving me a lesson or a warning, it's comical to me since I've already been there and done that. I've already separated it from the original material as far as possible where it's unrecognizable if you compared the two and that universe is only 1 of many I have under my belt. This sort of thing happens all the time even with working in fan-games where people make a fanwork but eventually separate from the initial IP and start to build their own. Sometimes it's very obvious where the inspiration comes from like how Freedom Planet started as a Sonic fan game but at the end of the day even if it's stylistically Sonic, the FP universe is completely different.

The world building I've done though is not even in the same vein as Tiny Toons and no where near the same genre, Sure there was a point where I imitated the look as a kid like any schmuck drawing copycat anime styles but that did not last long. Now they're incompatible with each other, one is a children's comedy show and the other is part of an epic. So trying to make an assumption that "fundamentally it's still Tiny Toons" is just so... SO stupid.

What I typed up is just a snarky way of how I ended up a furry. All the stuff about war, love, magic ect still does exist, but I never said it was mashed into 1 arc or even 1 story. Backstory and the cultural history of the universe is a thing you should know of and put to use in world building and in order for characters to have children sex must be involved, derp.

Your attitude on 100% original material looks very ignorant to me, how many times have we seen stories or themes get told and retold with a new fresh spin? You're aware both DBZ Goku and One Piece Luffy are based off the archetypal character of the Monkey King being a powerful purehearted goofball right? That's what you should focus on, putting your own viewpoint to spin on conceptual ideas, if you just stress over how to be totally unique 100% of the time you will get nowhere fast. It's much easier for someone to take a starting point to launch off of than to think up something completely unique and that's just what Tiny Toons was to me and my friends.

Don't put words in my mouth. I said "take you seriously". Nobody takes Twilight seriously, either, but it was still absurdly successful. The only noteworthy normalfag anthro character in recent memory in an adult-oriented work was Rocket Raccoon, and he was literally the only furry in the entire movie. I guess Chewbacca kinda counts, too, but it's also the same thing: 99% human cast.
