Fasting in a religious context is largely about allowing opportunity for growing spiritual awareness. The traditional motivations for fasting is to resign oneself from worldly matters with great conviction through unattached observation of desire. Yet you are still strongly focused on matters of the body when you are entering this period of fasting. There is a contradiction within yourself on what you want to do: fast, abstain from worldly desires, and familiarize yourself with the eternal or train and cultivate the body which will pass away.

This is okay. We all have contradictions, but I wonder if your religion is a yoke befitting you as an individual and your current level of spirituality. The disciplines one takes upon oneself out of free will seem more conducive to spiritual growth, and rarely is conviction found when a practice is forced upon oneself.

That said, I do not think others rightly know when it is best for you to go to gym or when it is best for you to fast but rather the truth is within you. Should you have forgotten how to find this truth, you might contemplate how you can live in union with yourself, above and below, spirit and body in total agreement, without going to war with yourself. Body and mind living in peace together stills the waters and allows one to see clearly.

This is an issue I'm running into as well. For many years now I've been quite devout and adamant in my own studies/practice and the have came pretty close multiple times to renouncing all worldly affairs and joining a monastery. However on the other hand, truly there is no difference between a monk and laymen. Merely putting on a robe doesn't change the body nor the mind in any capacity whatsoever.

It almost feels like renunciation would be a waste also. God gave me this passion for fitness, and a beautiful body as well. To live off one bowl of a rice a day and allow it to waste away would be like that servant in the Bible who buried his master's gold in the ground rather than investing it and using it wisely.

>need to care for my body because it is truly the temple of the living God

>need to make it look like a temple

>can't get attached to it though

It is hard for me to guess the larger context in which you say these things, and I'd rather not tell you what to do. But I will say what I have seen, and that is both asceticism and hedonism are attachments. Fasting done as an act of self-flagellation is attachment to desire and is not a natural development. It is attachment to desire, because acting in this way is a fight with illusory demons of desire within oneself. By acknowledging that they have power and you must fight them you give desire power over yourself through your own attachment to them. Fasting for practical reasons, such as preferring a moment of silence and acknowledging the desires are just streams of experience that do not harm or control you is a natural development. It's just the same with eating. If you have a practical need for eating (maybe you need a healthy and energetic body to do something you aim to do), then it's a natural development to eat. When you don't make a big deal over whether you are required to eat or required to fast, it is possible to move on to other concerns and live in higher realms of experience.
