I really recommend anyone who is serious about correcting their health to go read the works of Ray Peat and how polyunsaturated fatty acids is shutting down your thyroid and causing inflammation. He also writes about other things, such as estrogen side effects. Which estrogen is actually strongly correlated with PUFA intake as well. You're probably still eating tons of PUFA considering many "health" foods are high in PUFA, such as nuts, seeds, and poultry. Here's the link to his website and articles http://raypeat.com/

 No.131547

I stopped consumption of polyunsaturated fats myself (except where largely unavoidable outside of a laboratory designed diet) and only received benefits. It's nice to see someone else eating this way too, but I've found that outright directing people to Ray Peat - regardless of the fact that he has a Ph.D. in biology and uses references to scientific publications to support his claims in his articles - is often unhelpful and even counterproductive as it seems like one is shilling for yet another diet guru for yet another meme diet. When I instead started using scholarly search engines on the fly to answer questions, generate arguments, and tell compelling stories that pointed directly to papers and quotes therein, I not only avoided typical internet "debates" that lead nowhere but also refined and increased my own knowledge in a way that made me better able to judge Ray Peat's claims.

Most people at any given moment are not in a mindset that will allow them to slowly and carefully assess an entirely new framework of ideas, so when one sticks to smaller, simpler claims to prove or disprove, it is easier to gain a foothold in minds that have no background or context to understand where one is coming from. I liken it to disassembling a pyramid brick by brick rather than the whole monument at once.

How long have you been eating this way, and have you improved your health? Do you employ any special techniques? I started eating dried dates lately and my digestion seems better. People don't really understand how or why I go about purposefully increasing sugar intake.

Is there a list of polyunsaturated fat containing foods somewhere or will I have to examine everything I plan on eating?

 No.131553

>Is there a list of polyunsaturated fat containing foods somewhere

Yes, but because they can come from diverse sources, it is always best to consult nutrition databases. The main sources are vegetable oils such as corn oil, soybean oil, canola oil, flaxseed oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, etc, fatty fish and fish oil, nuts and seeds.

This table will show some comparisons:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetable_oil#Composition_of_fats

Note that coconut oil is listed as a "vegetable" oil, but of all the fats, coconut oil is among the most preferred for health benefits because it is so highly saturated with very little polyunsaturated fat content.

>>131551

>or will I have to examine everything I plan on eating?

It's not an either or matter. If one actually wants to successfully avoid polyunsaturated fats consistently, there is no choice but to both be aware of the main sources and inspect the ingredients of everything eaten.

>The main sources are vegetable oils such as corn oil, soybean oil, canola oil, flaxseed oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, etc, fatty fish and fish oil, nuts and seeds.

*and animals fed the above.

Ruminants have some resistance to such diets and tend to saturate the unsaturated fat that they eat.

 No.131564

>>131553 explained it well. You can find nutrition data bases that will list high PUFA foods. Also it's worth noting, if you're eating out at like a restaurant or something, they almost always cook their foods in seed oils. No way around that, but you can supplement with vitamin E with will negate many of the oxidative damages. Yeah it's sad people are shilling inferior "health" programs these days. It's why no one really knows what the fuck to put in their bodies.

So fish oil is bad for ya?

 No.131571

>>131570

In large amounts. You need some omega 3 and omega 6 fats, but in general you should cut back on unsaturated fats. I still take some fish oil, but most of the fat I eat is butter and coconut oil.

 No.131572

>shutting down your thyroid

The thyroid naturally shrinks with age, by the time you're mid 20's its already a shrived raisin.

 No.131573

>>131570 No fish oil has major immune suppressive properties. When it suppresses the immune function it's often mistaken for anti inflammatory. Just take a normal dose of aspirin, much better. And/or a good vitamin E supplement. But most vitamin industries actually put seed oils in their vitamin E supplements, so make sure you find one with no added oils in it.

 No.131574

>>131566 Mary Enig was fine. In fact Peat stated in a brief youtube video he thought the Weston Price diet was "better then most". However he also noted they promoted fish liver oils to which he thought was a bad idea. I kind of agree with him too. My one problem with the paleo/ancestral communities is the notion we should do everything EXACTLY like our ancestors. As if, modern science can't give us a better way? I look at it like this, our ancestor did JUST ENOUGH to be reasonably healthy. It's up to us now to optimize this.

I've never heard this before, can you list me some references I'd like to check it out. I do believe the older we get the more unsaturated our cells become, thus increasing the likelihood of thyroid dysfunction the older we get.

 No.131577

>>131574

Yes, but fish liver oils are really the only PUFA they promote, and that's more for the A and D than anything else. WAPFers are all bout that grass fed butter. When I'm doing keto I'll have a decaf 'bulletproof' coffee with a quarter pound (one regular stick) of grass fed butter and two tablespoons of mct. Lately I've combined keto with intermittent fasting, and I'll have two of these as part of my only meal of the day.

Aren't polyunsaturated fats supposed to be less damaging to your heart and circulation than saturated ones?

 No.131580

>>131577

Yeah I don't think it's overkill or anything like that. Fish liver oil does have less unsaturated fat then regular fish oil. I guess it's just all about preferences. Personally I'm use to taking a vitamin D3 supplement, plus eating beef liver once or twice a week for vitamin A. Fish liver oil, in small amounts, probably won't cause much harm. Especially if you take a good quality vitamin E supplement.

That was the assumption the American Heart Association came to. However they are solely focused on lipid panels. They believe anything that raises LDL is bad. They're too focused on one symptom to really get to the actual cause of heart disease. Which it seems hypothyroidism plays a big role in coronary artery disease. The polyunsaturated fats also raise our c-reactive proteins, which is a inflammatory marker. Focusing on carbohydrates seem to be the most important factor in preventing heart disease, however when dietary fat is eaten, it's best to be saturated.

eating oils is really bad but eating

>all kinds of whole raw unprocessed nuts and seeds

is good. it's the processed oil that gets you. nuts are very good for you.

really strange how high quality threads suddenly get slid and just sink into oblivion.

giving this good thread a courtest bump because there are a few new threads that suddenly showed up out of nowhere. not sure what's up with that but this beats some of them in thread quality. I might bump another thread or two if it's good with a similar post.

Fuck this meme diet.

Next up it will be all about the horror of olive oil, which is god tier. Coconut a shit. Also coconut oil is gentrified now, thanks to muh bulletproof coffee meme where you include coconut oil.

What gives energy is exercise, and everyone does anything except exercise. Energy drinks, meme diets, magical superfoods, etc.

Coconut oil is good to run on your skin, that's about all and olive oil may be better there as well.

olive oil has steroid like effects and thins your skin out. coconut oil is great for your skin if you're not allergic. most olive oil is fake and made by the olive oil world wide mafia that knows how to fake it cheap. if you can't get it fresh pressed from the farm it's probably fake.

In case you didn't notice, I'm from Europe. We don't have to worry about fake American shit because Italy and Greece are broke, guess what one of their biggest exports is?

The only thing to avoid is olive oil in plastic bottles.

Why would I notice if I wasn't talking to you.

>We don't have to worry about fake American shit because Italy and Greece are broke, guess what one of their biggest exports is?

Fake olive oil. The fake shit is the stuff exported from European countries, dipshit. Italy is the worst offender of them all. Greece and Spain aren't quite as bad. The main reason California Olive Ranch isn't fake is because it's a 100% American product, made with hipster California grown olives.
