F1 and Social Media Backmarker 12/01/14 (Mon) 14:35:19 b1771e No. 622
"Formula 1 has taken a major step forward in trying to get more engaged with fans through the creation of a Promotional Working Group. The think-tank held its first meeting ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as representatives of teams got together to evaluate ways of making F1 more popular. […] Ideas that have already been discussed are opening up the paddock on Thursdays, a better experience for fans during pit lane walkabouts and more interaction with drivers on race weekends. There also is an idea for a more cohesive social media push for F1 overall to ensure the sport is reaching and engaging the right audience." The other stuff is okay, I'm interested specifically in F1 and social media. Does anybody see the benefit of this? I know we have Lotus' twitter feed, but everything else already on social media is either generic quotes from/interviews with drivers or teams giving away hats. Does anybody care? Do any of you use social media for F1? Or by "embrace social media" do people just mean "stop deleting things on Youtube"?

I see no quarrel with F1 trying to reach out and involve fans more. A lot of the social media work done by teams does provide its audience with occasional rumors and "behind-the-scenes" knowledge. If it gets to the point where social media becomes something more orchestrated to create artificial drama (a-la WWE) then I have a problem. No one wants to read superficial shit which is just obvious media whoring made to retain the miniscule attention spans of autistic 16 year olds. That's essentially a philosophy that can be ascribed to all of Formula 1. Its a sport, not a show. And whatever form of entertainment should be derived from it being a sport. I couldn't give two fucks about either Lewis Hamilton shaving his left nipple or info wings.

I really have no issue with the paddock opening idea. I actually think that's kind of neat. One of the most interesting F1 posts I ever saw online was a post of pictures that the poster (then a kid) took on a disposable camera in a 90s test session that he got into via a family connection. It was wild, mechanics in grease stained shirts worked on exotic, colorful, and substantially smaller cars with interesting aero. The garages were just larger than cramped, the whole thing was much less sanitized. It was incredibly candid, you sensed that blood sweat and tears went into these cars and I'm hugely nostalgic for this despite never having seen it first hand. Info Wings are beyond lame, interaction with drivers will continue to be crap if it's a structured meet and greet, and this whole thing feels like trying to recapture the genie in the bottle. Most f1 drivers are without personality, and if they had it we wouldn't see it. The in season drama is a hell of a lot more interesting than the racing, and that's quite a bad sign. We shouldn't *spice it up* we should holistically permit it to be the cultural sensation that it was. That they're focusing on social media is good for getting new fans, but they seem to be missing the forest through the trees. I don't really use social media for F1, but I'm quite shocked that there isn't more user generated content, like F1 YouTube Poops, or fanart, or whatever. To stop deleting things and to actually post races from more than one user selectable camera (even indycar does this, and indycar is terrible) would be a nice start. It's a sport, not a show. A show is artificial and has no sport, but a sport can absolutely have spectacle.

>>635 This was what I was sort of getting at. My post was specifically brought up after reading some of the backlash against Bernie's comments a few weeks ago, when people would bring up the need for F1
to use social media platforms to engage with fans and things of that sort. My main issue with it is that teams and drivers already have twitter, etc. but almost everything there is more or less the same as what FOM feeds us over TV.
I do agree with the paddock stuff as well (although this being F1, they won't take it very far), I went to an NHRA event a few years ago as well as an Indycar race last year (they don't look quite as terrible in person) and having things more or less out in the open makes it feel much more like an event and less like just turning up to watch cars drive around.

Found them. They're from the 1991 Hockenheim Test Session. R.I.P. Andrea De Cesaris.

I use the F1 app on my phone, if you want to count that as social media. F1 needs fans to operate, especially since sponsorships are so important for a team to keep on running. It's necessary, but who knows if they can come up with something original. I hope they'd do some type of race weekend sweepstakes. Such an overused idea but it always works.

A small bit of advice to the FOM: STOP REMOVING EVERY LITTLE CLIP OF FORMULA 1 FROM YOUTUBE THIS WILL ONLY SERVE TO MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF FUN HATING DICKS WHO HATE POPULARITY AND FANS

>>1055 Yeah, it certainly looks that way. I'm shocked that they don't even sell races back to 1978~ when they obtained exclusive television rights on dvd or to stream.

>>1060 F1's main job is feeding Bernie as much moolah as possible.
I'd suggest removing him by any means necessary.

>>1064 As much as Bernie is cocking up anything and everything, I'd quite like if he changed the engine formula before he went.
