I saw this movie around 2010 in tv and I loved it from the very first moment
and his laid back attitude, oversleeping, not giving a fuck about what people in supermarket think about him
similar to Yo Asakura from Shaman King that I also saw as some kind of role model for a long time

In a way is a satyre of doomerdom, all characters in that movie are lost and are going nowhere, they just have diferent outlooks for coping with their lot in life but all of them have empty absurd lifes going nowhere.
With the coens i am never truly sure what they are shilling, i think is all about embracing the absurdity,

He;s definitely a doomer who's day is the typical round of mundane boring shit(which he is ok with), until he accidentally falls into some weird shit with rich people

>yeah I lost a briefcase
<okay sir, what was in your briefcase
>ummm, work stuff like papers and stuff
<what types of papers sir?
<work related papers
this was the funniest part of the movie. He loses a briefcase full of cash
>work stuff and papers
>is dressed like a homeless
>probably didnt even shower for a week
dedicated to his Arbajt

No way. The dude is a bloomer if anything. He's not torn up about his NEEThood and does fine for himself.

He's my role model for sure.

>The dude is a bloomer if anything
Yea, he's got some sort of gov check coming in and he's got his bowling and reefer and white russians and a couple of friends
and he's the laziest man on the west coast
And that's pretty lazy

The Dude is an example of how to take the negative and see your glass as 1/3 full

I think the lines are something like this:
>yeah I lost a briefcase
<okay sir, what was in your briefcase
>ummm, work stuff like papers and stuff…yeah…papers..
The emphasis is on the word "papers" which also has marijuana-related rolling-papers connotations in us drug slang…while he is emphasizing this last word, they cut to a scene of one of the cops suspiciously poking around Lebowski's ash-tray and examinining what looks to be a joint-butt…its a very subtle word/image pun, the kind of thing you barely notice and is not "hilarious" but is non-stop enough to be funny as an almost subliminal "bass-line" of low humor in that movie.
Also, 99% of the lines in that movie are quotable on their own.

nah, he seems way too laid back and doesn't give a shit. I enjoyed the movie for what it is, but had a hard time relating to any of the characters.

Nah I think its the old hippie/slacker archetype of the early 90's, the dude isn't a depressed doomer just a laid back guy who doesn't really give a shit but its still content with his life even if bad shit happens. He only seems a bit nostalgic about his younger days in some scenes but he doesnt seem to regret it.
