so ive had my hair in a ponytail for the last 5 years, and ive just noticed that on the sides of my head my hairline is receding by 1 or 2 cm. obviously this isnt good, but is there anything i can do to reverse this, short of surgery? im willing to drop some money on some treatment if need be.

short of that, how much does surgery cost in the UK?

cant be done as far as i can see, all the products ive looked into work on the same basic premise, extend the growth cycle of the hair. this lasts only as long as you use the product, and only works where hair has not already gone. as far as i can see claims of regrown hairs in bald spots are bullshit.

Don't know what you've read into but finasteride and dutasteride are perfectly fit for the job.

describe how they work to me please, ive spent more or less most the day looking into this and i dont think ive found anything that isnt a straight up existing follicle growth promoter that doesnt involve some fancy stem cell and T cell shit.

They block the DHT production which slows and sometimes reverses male baldness pattern (of course only if DHT is the actual cause, if it isn't it doesn't do anything). Not sure about the exact biochemical process but it's definitely a lot more potent than the common commercial products (caffeine shampoo or whatever is out there). It can mess with your hormones and thus libido/sexual function but that's rather unlikely, of course you should still talk to an endocrinologist about it.

If you're actually from the UK, you will not get finasteride for hair loss from the NHS. That's their policy on that. You will have to go to a private clinic and fund a private prescription instead.

Minoxidil is over the counter, finasteride is not.

Your GP might tell you do go private for it, but generally speaking, this is something you can either go private for, or go through the grey market for.

Despite being a prescription medicine, getting it without a prescription is possible. There are certain sites which sell this along with other prescription medicices, but other than a piece of legislation which stops you from buying it from a seller in the UK, there's not a lot people can do about you getting hair loss treatment.

While it's best you go to a doctor about this, finasteride and dutasteride are pretty safe.

You should know that the main side effects from finasteride and dutasteride can be reduced body and facial hair gorwth, and a possibility of developing gyno.

Think about it, maybe talk to your GP.

>Minoxidil is over the counter, finasteride is not.

minodoxil is a glorified hair conditioner. its nice but not worth the price when there are cheaper, similar drugs in relatively ordinary shampoos.

It's technically prescription-only. But for certain medicines, online pharmacies offer a private online consultation with a doctor, and the drug itself with one cost as a service, then ship to your house, which significantly reduces the cost.

There's a site called Simple Online Pharmacy that charges £14.99 for a month's supply of generic finasteride including consultation and prescription, another called PrivateDoc charges £19.99. There's a bunch more - you get the idea, it's attainable. You don't need the brand, generic is fine.

The major side effects are erectile dysfunction, decreased libido and depression.

It's not very likely you'll get it prescribed - the boxes apparently cost the NHS £34 a month, and NHS doctors can have a 'there be dragons' attitude to anything outside the service, especially because if anything goes wrong they'll be the one who has to treat you so they'd rather you just didn't cause them the hassle. Ignore them if they say 'don't do it'.

Finasteride inhibits an enzyme that converts testosterone into a more potent form, DHT, resulting in reduced levels of DHT. DHT causes baldness by causing hair follicles to shrink and eventually de-activate. The enzyme's found in particularly high concentrations in the scalp, and other areas like the prostate. The evidence is that hair loss is more related to over-sensitivity to DHT than over-production, but reducing the levels still works.
