I had to check this out. The author's wikipedia page doesn't shed very much praise on any of his work, ever. It doesn't look like he (Ernest Cline) had much exposure to those cultural niches you mention, so that's possibly why all the cultural allusions make no sense. How this became a movie is incredible however. I don't know if I will suffer myself to read it, but from that blatant propaganda, the tone and its purpose seem very clear.
