I used to be a huge fan of Destiny when I was younger(late highschool-early uni). I probably started watching him within a year of him starting to stream, and he was honestly one of the first serious streamers. I don't know where or how well this stuff is documented, but he is probably an underappreciated trailblazer/trendsetter in a some niche and mainstream internet culture. It's really sad to see him now, because he has totally regressed as a person into a hollow shell of former self, and I watched it unfold with a level of detail in a hitherto uncanny one-way relationship.

Don't get me wrong, he was always a pseudo-intellectual. But he acknowledged that, and pushed forward his thoughts in an earnest, self-aware, and appropriately self-critical manner. He was funny in a filter-less, childish, but organic way; his style was like a window into a raucous conversation between close friends. He had goals that he strove for and genuine interests that he shared with his viewers who experienced his success and failure. His popularity as a streamer can be singly attributed to the beacon of humanity and personality he shone in the awkward, and cliquey commercial pretensions of early streaming and 'esports'. But boy does popularity kill the soul, and I think he subjected himself willingly and through his personal failures to some pretty harsh troll.

Within a few years, it was clear that his career as professional gamer probably wouldn't amount to anything. He had the intelligence and time to practice, but certain elements of pride and sloth made him inclined to play for personally developed gimmicks, ignore conventional strategy, and practice incredibly stupidly for someone who had trained to be a professional musician: grinding full ladder games on loop for days at a time. He begrudgingly acknowledged his role as an entertainment personality, and prioritized increasing his viewership, but those calculated attempts could never have the same effect as his genuine personality, which was beginning to deteriorate. To his personal relationships I won't go into too much detail out of respect and an attempt to paint a fair picture, but suffice to say they were disastrous, and possibly as a consequence, he reached further and further into his stream chat, and thus their idolization, as source of validation.

His chat was always a mixed bag: plenty of idiocy, sycophants, and smart people with interesting backgrounds and skills. He interacted with his chat a lot, more than any other streamer. There was plenty of interesting discussion and stupid and ironic memes which he ruled over as an initially benevolent dictator. It is no exaggeration to say this became a cult of personality. I had been watching him for several years, mostly lurking but with some chat presence, by the time it started to get really nasty. The trend I noticed, which had developed gradually but now really sickens me to think about, was that Destiny, often after experiencing some grief or frustration, would state some fairly well known fact or mildly provocative opinion, and then just watch the chat. He watched, looking at the cascade of people generally agreeing with him or supporting him, ignoring them, waiting and watching for the first person to say something contrary or incorrect. And then he'd POUNCE on them, insulting their intelligence while promoting his, usually resulting in a ban and a chorus of laughter and applause from the rest of the chat. To be fair, a lot of these people were deliberately trolling, but even then the theatrics wouldn't be necessary. He stopped trying to play any games seriously, and his stream became a string of forced drama, arguments, and celebrity.

Around this time is when I stopped watching him, though I had been turned away by a lot of other red flags before I really saw how messed up the whole situation was. I tried multiple times to check back in and see if things had improved, but I just found it worse and worse and grew disgusted with his character. One of the last times I checked in he was 'debating' Martin Skhreli over nebulous issues including his endorsement for Trump. At one point, Skhreli mentioned how a particular hormone or something could treat some kind of dwarfism, and Destiny challenged him "If that's true, how come I haven't heard about it?!". And Shkreli replied in essence "Maybe because I ran a major pharmaceutical company and you stream video games". I think Steven Bonnell suffers from a delusion of universal intelligence and expertise from the persona, Destiny, he and his popularity created, and his intentions in debate are not to seek Truth or engage in honest dialogue, but to validate his persona and satisfy his sadism through whatever avenue is available that satisfies the temperament of his flock. I don't watch or listen to him anymore, because it's too sad to see. Take heed and learn from the tragic fate of Destiny.

Unlikely. I don't find him entertaining anymore, or at least his behavior turns me off enough for me to not enjoy it. But more importantly I have concrete things in my life I want to accomplish now and I set my own goals, so I don't get as much enjoyment from passive consumption and am more aware of its potentially negative effects.

Maybe if things did chill down and he played a game I was interested in. He had some great music, doing homework with his stream in the background was comfy.

I feel similarly to you do. I only found out about him this year because he did a discussion with another Youtuber I was a fan of, I found him to be courteous and interesting at the time and I watched more of his videos. I watched a half dozen of his debates and I thought they were really good if only because he seemed to attract people who would embarrass themselves publicly on his stream. Then when I saw the Martin Shkreli discussion, and with the same example you used, I started to realize that Destiny had a bit of an ego.

When he wasn't 'debating' a big Youtubers, which even after preparing and focusing would devolve into him getting heated and basically just shouting at them while failing to make a coherent point, he'd often just be playing a game and half focusing on his guest and only responding to say something along the lines of "Do you know what you just said? That's like, the most idiotic thing I've ever heard? Do you really think that?". The only times he's worth watching is when he's talking to someone who wouldn't be able to argue with a brick wall, otherwise he fumbles and gets angry.

In the end he's just pretending to be a smart person. He's not well read, he's not well spoken, at his best he has an ability to logically connect points to reach a conclusion and he seems OK at structuring his argument, but he relies almost entirely on empirical evidence which to me seems to indicate that he has no proper ideological principles or foundations and just has opinions and feelings he has to justify with empirical data, he can't make an argument without opening up google to look up something to justify his conclusion. It's weak. He has the intellectual and emotional maturity of someone late in their adolescence.

Sorry if this was a little redundant I just wanted to air my distaste of Destiny.

Got into IBS a month ago so I'm not as up to date a many of you.

I noticed that he had a talk with Styx recently. Styx seemed more relaxed and confident, refusing to engage in 'gotcha' hair splitting arguments that Destiny uses. In the end Destiny was visibly angry and hysterical while Styx was more composed. You could tell he was pissed. A day or two after Destiny puts up a video trying to discredit styx for being a holocaust denier.
