>Nearly 11 years after the conclusion of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, the former superhero turned lawyer for the cartoon elite will return for a half-hour animated special, Harvey Birdman, Attorney General.
>In the special, megalomaniac billionaire — and Sebben & Sebben law firm co-founder — Phil Ken Sebben is the president of the United States, and (of course) has selected Harvey Birdman as his attorney general. So, now it’s up to Harvey to find a way to remove Phil from office, “before everyone starts to worry it’s more than the ridiculous plot to an animated show.”
>Gary Cole will reprise his role as Harvey Birdman, joined by Stephen Colbert as Phil Ken Sebben, John Michael Higgins as Mentok the Mindtaker, Paget Brewster as Birdgirl, Chris Edgerly as Peter Potamus, Peter MacNicol as X the Eliminator and Phil LaMarr as Black Vulcan.
>“This is a great day for our country and for no one else,” co-creator Erik Richter said in a statement.

No.993730
>>993721
You should read all the stories about Toth. He was the most cantankerous fuck in all of comics/animation. He'd rip people's art to shreds with critiques as blunt as possible, hurt a lot of feelings, but everything he said was absolutely correct. He even ripped Bruce Timm apart for Superman the Animated Series. His critique of Steve Rude is legendary.
Also, while he was alive, you could actually mail him copies of your comic art and he'd critique them. Paul Pope recounted sending his early art to Toth and it would come back completely bloody with red x's, with absolutely venomous notes written in the margins.
No.993731
>>993730
Bruce Timm, even after getting his ass ripped apart by Toth, had this to say of Toth's critique of Rude:
>….years later, i got ahold of the infamous toth critique , and read through it nodding my head all the while….without a doubt, toth was going overboard with the scorn, but if you get past the curmudgeonly venom, you realize that point by point, he's bang - on….and the thing is, even after getting toth's critique, steve STILL makes the same kinda off-kilter storytelling choices as he did in the JONNY QUEST story, to this day…as if he didn't take a single piece of toth's criticism to heart….i hate to say it, but since reading the toth critique, i can't fully appreciate steve's stuff as much as i used to….sure, his draftsmanship is still as dazzling and rock-solid as ever (and godDAMN, how the man can PAINT), but i find myself focussing on the odd storytelling quirks rather than the pretty pitchers…
No.993733

>those notes

oho man, could you imagine what he'd say to somebody in the industry today? Better yet, imagine their reaction.
No.993735
>>993731
This concludes the infamous critique of Steve Rude. Steve Rude is an amazing artist, so needless to say, this tear down caused some controversy.
Anyway, that isn't my favorite story about Toth. My favorite story is Toth getting called over to Jack Kirby's place to "talk shop", only for both of them to be so different when it came to art that neither of them could understand what the other was saying.
No.993741
>>993735
Kirby and Toth were each other's opposites. Kirby's work is busy and chaotic, but Toth's is minimalist and orderly. Kirby's comic career started in Marvel, Toth's at DC. Kirby was drafted to serve in Europe, Toth in Japan, and so on,,,

Alex Toth was a God.
He's fallen into obscurity, but he was as influential as Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, or Wally Wood in setting the paradigm for comic book art. And also setting the standard for realistic animation in television in the same way Walt Disney did for film animation.
Frank Miller cribbed a lot from Toth when he reinvented his own style for Sin City. Steve Rude of course is the biggest Toth fanboy when it comes to his own work.
Nobody else ever had that stripped-down elegance, that confidence of line to do the most with the least, the closest we got was Steve Rude, and look how Toth ripped HIM a new asshole. Imagine what he'd have to say about Rob Liefeld, or Greg Land, or, god help us, fucking Calarts.

That's not exactly accurate. Kirby served in World War 2, seeing action and nearly getting his feet frozen off. Toth was drafted into the Korean war and was stationed in Tokyo, never serving on the front.
Not saying anything positive or negative of either of them, just illustrating that there was an age difference between them.
>>993773
>Imagine what he'd have to say about Rob Liefeld, or Greg Land
Alex Toth died in 2006.
Also, while you should admire his art, don't take him as a role-model. He was such a cranky asshole that he had few friends and pushed his first wife away. Toward the end of his life, Toth's kids had to stage an intervention just to get him to be a part of their lives.
The Space Ghost DVD set has a documentary about Toth that's surprisingly candid. It broke my heart seeing his son tear up when recounting his dad finally admitting he wanted to see his grandchildren.

Toth is not nearly as obscure as Wally Wood. Daredevil fags are probably the worst offenders, since Wood saved series from getting cancelled, and as a result probably prevented DD from getting completely forgotten like many other failed capes. Wood is also the one responsible for full black-red costume. And yet, he is almost completely ignored for some reason. Maybe it has something to do with his 'problematic' satirical and good girl art.
