>As part of its growing acquisition of content from Africa, Netflix has announced its first original African animated series - Mama K's Team 4.

>The series is produced by award-winning South Africa based studio, Triggerfish Animation, and London based kids and family entertainment specialist, CAKE.

>Mama K's Team 4 tells a story of four teenage girls living in a futuristic version of Lusaka, Zambia's capital city. The girls are recruited by an ex-secret agent to save the world.

>Designed by Cameroonian artist Malcolm Wope, the animation drew inspiration for the visuals from retro 90s hip hop girl groups, Netflix said in a statement announcing the deal.

>It was written by Zambian writer, Malenga Mulendema who was one of the eight winners of the 2015 Triggerfish Story Lab initiative, a talent hunt for African storytellers.

>Mulendema says she grew up watching cartoons and wondered why none of the heroes looked like her.

>"In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero," she said in the Netflix statement.

Well, at least it's not forced cultural enrichment (at least not to a certain degree), so I'll give it a pass for now if they're actually passionate about it.

But I doubt a lot of Africans will watch it.

Because who the frigg has the time and money to afford Netflix in Africa?!

I mean really, the way I see it, the only people who'll actually watch it in Africa are "Pirates", and the 0,1%.

It's just another sad symbol of the economic inequality and instability still plaguing the continent…

Africa has a burgeoning middle class. You'd be surprised.

Inevitably, whenever they reach for these "african storytellers" most of what they end up with is just western styled storytelling with a coat of nigger paint and maybe some half-assed lip service about spirits and animals. That proud African culture with all its supposedly rich history falls apart the instant they are asked to make a show or movie like the Americans do.

How fucking rich is Netflix that they keep churning out garbage after garbage yet still keep afloat? Or are they one of those companies that are running on red and investors are hoping to get their money's worth in a couple of decades time?

Netflix isn't profitable. In fact they're billions in debt and operating on borrowed time. It's thanks to injections of external funding from Soros and other groups interested in using the platform for propaganda that keeps it hobbling along.

Believe it or not, middle class niggers exist and are growing in Africa. But your comment about China isn't entirely irrelevant, because Africa is going the Chinese route when it comes to development: a few islands of proseprity in an ocean of misery, that stil represent an interesting market trough the sheer number of people involved.

Superheroes aren't real so they literally can be anyone from anywhere. The only all-encompassing merit they have for the consumer is their entertainment value. The real question is: will this be entertaining? It probably will be for kids. They're easy as fuck to please.

>>1057949

If anon above is right about the subscriber number/fee then Netflix is making 1.2 billion a month. Even if they have to pay 1 billion a month to license holders, that's still 250 mil left for their company. No wonder Disney wants a piece of the streaming pie.

I didn't say this was wrong I said it was a platitude. It's like saying "magic can do anything in a story". Yeah everyone knows this but you still need to ground it in order for it to have any weight in a narrative.

American cartoons are mostly crap these days, so I don't mind seeing what other countries can come up with at least for the novelty of it. Saudi Arabia's made Yaroob, UAE made Emara, and South Korea made plenty of good animated movies. Even North Korea made Squirrel and Hedgehog. So I wouldn't mind African countries making cartoons since there is at least a possibility it might not be soyboy calarts shit.

This show is already incredibly Americanized based on the story and art style. There's barely anything African about it other than the location.

Especially when we've got youtube as an example and there is a streaming war going on now. Not like Netflix has ever been good with quality. They aim for quantity where 25% of the stuff on there that is their own IP is good to great and worth a watch, and the rest of the 75% is crap and making you ask, "Why did you fund this?"

I might give it a shot since foreign stuff seems to do better on netflix in quality than American stuff most of the time but it looks like its drawing more inspiration from an American perspective in cartoons. It looks like they wanted to make their own version of High Guardian Spice because it's got the tumblr art down.

It'd be cool if they had something like this comic we had a storytime on a while back. It was made by an african guy about these two brothers who want revenge on a warlord that killed their village and it has this tribal look mixed with space tech which seemed unique and cool.

They need to fucking cut down on the garbage they put out. Every Netflix movie is just a step above Asylum. Their series catalog is 99% shit. I have no idea how they can waste so much on this and expect to make a buck in the end. Then again, I'm not running a world wide streaming service so what do I know. It's just so infuriating to see a company with so much customer data and analytics be so wasteful.

Where's my goddamn mega-budgeted Metabarons adaptation, man?
