Michael Mantlo, the younger brother of Rocket Raccoon creator Bill Mantlo, is nearly bankrupt due to the costs of bringing his brother home. He's $100,000 in the hole and his brother's royalties and his own fixed income aren't enough to pay it off. The creditors are knocking on his door and he's created a GoFundMe in hopes of getting some help.

>Royalties aren't enough to support the author who is hospitalized

Well now that just gets me thinking. One would assume that the royalties for a character that is long standing in comics and also a major player in the Disney Cinematic Universe would be substantial. While true it's not enough to live comfortably for life you think it would be of more help than it is right now.

Can someone break down how Royalties are earned? Is it only through sales of the comics that he gets paid or is it any official use of his character?

Im pretty sure Marvel/ Disney own's the character rights.

>>1057173

If they owned the rights entirely, then would he not receive any royalties at all? I was udner the impression that royalties are payments to the owner of the IP for use of said creation If he didn't own the character then why is he still receiving payments.

Again I don't fully know how this process works which is why I asked my question int he first place. If I'm way off I apologize.

They don't have to pay him royalties, it's work for hire. He created Rocket Raccoon before Jim Shooter instituted a policy that would automatically guarantee royalty payments if the characters get used in other comics, or in other media or in merchandising. So Marvel don't actually have to pay him shit

Now the doctor came in, stinking of gin

And proceeded to lie on the table

He said, "Rocky, you met your match"

And Rocky said, "Doc, it's only a scratch

And I'll be better, I'll be better, Doc, as soon as I am able"

Now Rocky Raccoon, he fell back in his room

Only to find Gideon's Bible

Gideon checked out, and he left it, no doubt

To help with good Rocky's revival

Classic case of US Copyright being a legal bludgeon for making money

Not exactly, contractual work typically means any if not all creative work done for the company belongs to the company. Been legal for eons, though more and more companies tend to be more forgiving than others nowadays.

I hear DC has been pretty good as of late for handing out royalties and with being generous Stralin got more money out of the royalties for Lucius Fox than he did for Thanos pre-Infinity war.

 No.1057219

>>1057217

Well, that would be interesting because he didn't create Lucius Fox, Len Wein did.

I don't think Mantlo was even paid royalties until fairly recently. If I remember correctly, he only got something once Disney bough Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy film was confirmed. People were bringing Mantlo up for years before Marvel finally did something because otherwise they could face new lawsuits, controversy, and bad press - something they can't have when marketing their films.

>Can someone break down how Royalties are earned?

There are no numbers as far as I know. According to this article which cites a letter written by Mantlo's brother, Marvel stepped up and offered a generous sum of money.

Most of Mantlo's care costs up until that point was covered by Medicare and insurance.

>>1057217

DC in general treated most creators better than Marvel. There is a reason why there are far more Marvel to DC transitions than vice versa. For example, Chuck Dixon supposedly gets more money from Bane Royalties than from everything he worked on for Marvel put together. Bane and Birds of Prey Royalties let him live comfortably and pretty much do what he wants. To the point of turning down proposal of working on Expendables movie script because film studios were lowballing him.

>>1057737

Maybe a little bit. However, Michael Mantlo has a chin, does not slouch, and is far less wormy than Norton.
