I know how you feel. The series always felt like a fight against fate that just maybe Hellboy and others could pull off. But then this ending just leaves us with the sad fact it was all hopeless. They only prolonged the end. With it being so short making it all the more unsatisfactory. Not having all the information needed to really know it'll be okay even after the end. Fuck we don't even know if Heaven is a real realm in the comics. So we don't have total closure for the dead either.

I feel like Hellboy has been constantly outperformed by his peers. Hell, he is like Finn in Adventure Time, where he isn't even the protagonist of his own story.

That's because Hellboy is the villain of his own story. He brings about the end of the world. Either through leading the armies of hell to conquer the earth or through releasing the Ogdru Jahad. His whole story was always trying to run away from that fate. His own personality is that of a tired crusty old man that doesn't wanna deal with anything. It's not surprising then that his own stories usually keep happening in other ways when he denies taking the path he needs to.

It's surreal but humans can imagine infinite punishment pretty easily.

But infinite goodness (Not just hedonistic pleasure), we can't. I see a fuck ton of Cthulu-esque crap thrown around because its popular, but if there truly is something beyond human comprehension then its the idea of pure goodness.

I think it because it also glosses over the consequences of any actions. It's kinda less grim then it should be to a certain extent.

I think humans really got the better end of the deal here. They get some underground thing with sunlight and when the next end of the world bullshit happens they can safely ignore it.

That would be more melancholy, and probably more bitter but less "Whatevs".

I mean the nature of "The end of the world" seems really arbitrary now that I think about it. So like the Ogrdu descend and THEY don't count as the end of the world, neither is the Osiris society causing that deathsplosion.

But hellboy…. doing something something something, does count as the end of the world.

Like if hell entered earth would that still not count as the end of the world till hellboy did…whatever he did?

Or fuck, a nice "end of the world as we know it" scenario.Humanity will die if they don't change, or they might die and hellboy send them to a nice heaven or turn hell into a heaven for the unfortunate victims of the apocalypse. Or turn people into pseudo frog fish men like Abe or demons like him, mutating them just to survive the destroyed world even if a lot of people die.And at least have a last battle with the Dragon instead of plotkilling it in one page.

Its like watching 3/4s of a movie and then suddenly watching the last part at X6 speed. Sure there was buildup and events beforehand but that final stretch felt like it zoomed away.

its certainly better in Hells none ending that either meant nothing to the casual reader or if you remember the wizard and the serpent it was just a 'wait for HB to come back in BPRD!' teaser fodder.

This was a simple but nice resolution. Hellboy is the beast of 'an' apocalypse but not the end of everything, you could really argue he was really only the beast of the apocalypse for hell itself as the ultimate irony of the thing. But humanity survives in the hollow earth as the new 'former masters driven below' like the hyperboreans were to humanity, now the abe sapien men take the surface world not as some demonic invasion but simply life continuing on after an ecological collapse as it has done many times before. Its not 'fuck year humanity' its a very lovecraftian 'we are insignificant and part of a long cycle' the different between mignola and lovecraft is the ethos of mignola is 'the different is choice, thats what makes a man a man' and Hellboy chose rather than have some cavalcade of assholes choose for him. Thats a fitting end.
