Recently I asked around here and there for recommendations on Spider-Gwen books because to be honest I was really attracted to the design and without knowing too much about the whole Marvel Universe but enough to at least know who Gwen Stacy was.

The thing is, everyone agreed on something, when it comes to art Spider-Gwen only has good covers and got me thinking, is this a frequent thing in comic books?

Invidious embed. Click thumbnail to play.

No. Sometimes you have covers that are just plain bad. Usually with poor perspective or completely devoid of background detail. Just tons of negative space. Or even just covers that have nothing to do with the story. Those are the most common for the basic big two comic.

>>1056939

OK, that's certainly bad too.

 No.1056944

Yes. Interior artists doing the covers themselves is rare outside of the indie stuff, usually because the covers have to be done months in advance so they shown alongside the solicitations. So it's more expedient to let other artists do them. Plus, cover art does pay better, so course they're reserved for artists worth the rate.

That being said, any interior artists (overall) worth checking? any books they have done in particular too?

I remember all the comic journalists bloggers crowing about Silk being Asian and a girl, but like how the story goes every time, everyone suddenly stopped caring once the books came out. I decided on a whim to check it out, and Silk despite being in a bunker all of her life is peppy, upbeat and quippy, like all the others. What could have been an interesting character is just Whedon Action Girl #281. Having her get a job at the Bugle also just cements her as yet another SpiderMan. The 'lived her entire life in a bunker' thing is not used to try to make an anti-social or even a borderline autistic character, but just to make lazy pop culture references. Where's all the VHS tapes?? LOL

Very disappointing. However, the covers look really good.

Is she the one whose powers include making Peter Parker horny?

I don't know that much about Silk, but making people horny is a Spider-Woman thing as she spritzes out pheromones. That power has diminished considerably as her new outfit has the uncanny ability to make no one horny. Her comic covers are just as bad as the interior pages.

I think I heard about this one, the "progressive" hero who fights while pregnant.

Yes, actually. At least when she first appeared in Slott's Spidey run. Naturally it was probably glossed over once she got her own book.

In Marvel, Gurihiru are the best artist team consistently working on interiors. Unfortunately, they are currently saddled with art duties for Unbeatable Wasp relaunch.

Tradd Moore is pretty good, but he seems to be Cho's replacement as the cover artist who sometimes does interiors to lure people in. Just like Cho, he will likely do less and less interiors as the time goes on. Moore is also getting a bit too extreme with his artstyle lately if New World is anything to go by. It slowly starts to look like western knockoff or Keisuke Itagaki's style.

DC has Sean Gordon Murphy. He is very good overall, but sometimes cuts corners and gets sloppy. Still, he is the best American comic book artist currently working when it comes to drawing cars, bikes, and other machinery. There is also Sean Williams, who is capable of some high quality artwork, but his layout experiments sometimes turn out mixed results. Other than that, DC has some competent people, but no one outstanding. Generally, it is easier to find competent art in a DC book than a Marvel one.

There are quite a few competent people drawing non-big two comics. However, the last person to be truly impressive was Jason Stokoe. I am not too up to date on more recent indie books, since I have less time to read comics nowadays, and prefer European stuff followed by manga.

The premise of her character sounds like that show on Netflix where this chick was raised in an underground cult but then gets liberated and has to adjust to modern life.

>>1056991

Funny thing about that one I don't think even the feminists liked it that much.

>>1057017

>Trad Moore

I have to get around to reading Luthor Strode.

I know Stokoe mainly from some Godzilla stuff. I still got to read Half-Century War.

>Stokoe

He also did Alien: Dead Orbit and Orc Stain. Both comics are very good overall. Stories are basic but done well, and art is very good. Unlike most American creators, he does everything on both comics, so he uses panels for more than simply illustrating dialogue. Because of that stories and dialogue coexist and complement each other well, dialogues are not overused, and onomatopoeias fit in with the art perfectly.

There is other stuff, Stokoe worked on, but so far I only read Wonton Soup and Fire for Effect. Wonton Soup was ok, but not as good as Dead Orbit and Orc Stain. Fire for Effect is just a silly short story with lots of violence.

Thanks, that's who I actually meant but put Gordon Murphy's name by accident.

Do it Norman. You're the hero we need.
