Despite it's faults, this revival really proves a lot of things. Like that a consistent creative team working on a story that actually progresses while slowly building up a universe is better than having too many cooks in the kitchen that just wanna one up everyone before them. Or even try to fuck each other up. What I'm saying is… I like this show more than anything we've gotten through the movies or the comics. For a long long time.
Now if only it didn't have to ruin Beast Boy with a new voice or reference TTGO.
I do strangely like all the nods to more recent DC characters like Damian, Jon, but less so Harper Rowe.

Are you fucking kidding me?
Everything past season 1 has been a total clusterfuck and even the tail end of season 1 was pushing it. If by "building up the universe" you mean stuffing as many characters in the show as possible while developing none of them then I agree wholeheartedly. Between that, the time-skips, villain plans always working out asspulls, and increasing political bullshit this show has be a downhill mess since the start of season 2.
If the show had focused entirely on the team from S1 (get rid of rocket, she doesn't need to be there and the cast was already bloated by that point) while interweaving the Lights plan with the young heroes coming of age story this whole thing would have gone a lot better. As it stands now it's really hard to give a shit about the team when it changes every dozen episodes; Tragedy and high stakes don't mean much when you don't give a shit about the main cast.
I hate to use this as an example but ATLA did it right, by the third season you had seen the main cast (especially Zuko) go through trials and tribulations which grew them as characters; the story was as much about them as it was the great threat they had to face, the characters moved the plot as much as the world moved the characters. That just isn't there for young justice past season one, the main cast are pieces on a board that are moved and removed with little regard for their development, the majority of the cast in YJ are more like stage props than a cast.

When you have a universe as massive as DC's you're gonna wanna use everything you can to build your world narrative even at the cost of important development of many characters.

Our world has acast of several billion. No one uses all of them in a story. No one should try to use all of them in a story. You don't have to, in order to tell a good story.
But if you really want to, focus on one new character per episode and forget about them, at least for a good long while.

We're not fantastical cape heroes & villains. We're just people. Using that sort of argument makes no sense.
They've already done plenty to flesh out the important characters like Nightwing, Superboy, Impulse, Beast Boy, Miss Martian, Aqualad/man, & Blue Beetle. The Team itself isn't even the focus this season. It's literally called Outsiders because the focus is on those outside of The League & The Team.

not the guy you are replying to but,
>We're not fantastical cape heroes & villains. We're just people. Using that sort of argument makes no sense.
It does when there are an exceedingly high number of them and growing by the episode. The fact that the entirety of the JL is used as nothing more than a plot device (if even that) shows how little most of super beings matter in the universe. YJ is overflowing with super-powered beings to the point that most of them are being used as plot devices in bulk, and I mean that literally as that's the whole "plot" of S3.
>They've already done plenty to flesh out the important characters like Nightwing, Superboy, Impulse, Beast Boy, Miss Martian, Aqualad/man, & Blue Beetle.
Bullshit, character development isn't something you do in a previous season and then forget about it later on when it comes to the main cast, it's a constant process and an integral part of the story. Also what kind of on screen development have we seen from the OG cast since S1? Just as an example all of Superboys maturation and interactions with Superman are all stated or implied when never see it happen, we are just told it happens; How about Robins transition to Nightwing, how did that happen?
>The Team itself isn't even the focus this season. It's literally called Outsiders because the focus is on those outside of The League & The Team.
which is exactly the problem!

They matter but they're not the focus. It's called 'Young Justice' not 'Justice League show 57'. Of course the focus is not gonna be on the Justice League.
You know enough to know there's growth happening. But yes it is breaking the cardinal sin of 'show don't tell'.
HOW?!

>They matter but they're not the focus. It's called 'Young Justice' not 'Justice League show 57'. Of course the focus is not gonna be on the Justice League.
You are dodging and you know it, I used the JL to prove that you are wrong about the bloated cast not being a problem. You said it yourself " It's called 'Young Justice' not 'Justice League " which is why they should be focusing on the original cast throughout the series instead of having a constantly changing bloated roster that are gone before the audience ever gets a chance to get attached to them.
>You know enough to know there's growth happening. But yes it is breaking the cardinal sin of 'show don't tell'.
it's shit writing and removes all investment by the audience. It's one thing to see a character go through an ordeal or have a life changing experience and another to just be told it happened in an offhand bit of dialog or even for it to just be implied. Also, no I don't know enough, that's the problem! Go through the list of all the hero's on the team and tell me how they came to be part of the team? or how their origins stories play out? In S1 we see exactly how the team formed and where each character is from but contrast that with S2, what is Wonder Girls origin in this universe, how about Tim Drakes? So many members of the team were just put there all the while the OG cast got ignored, the result was that no one really got to shine.
>HOW?!
Because the show is called Young Justice! And the constant changing of the roster makes caring about what happens to the characters and the world difficult.
Pic related should have been the main cast for all three seasons and not a single character more, otherwise there just isn't enough screen time for development and progressing the plot.

That's nothing to do with the Justice League not being the focus.
I'll give you that it is a genuine problem that so much happens off screen & the average watcher isn't even gonna know any of these new characters. Even most former comic readers probably won't know a number of them either.
Superboy, Dick, Miss Martian, & Artemis have featured in all 3 seasons as important characters that develop through each season. Aqualad is the only one who misses out on the focus because he's taken Aquaman's place on the Justice League. Meaning he has no reason to show up with the younger team or the outside vigilante splinter group.

you are either dodging or dense, I can't tell. The point was:
<Our world has a cast of several billion. No one uses all of them in a story. No one should try to use all of them in a story. You don't have to, in order to tell a good story.
your response was:
>We're not fantastical cape heroes & villains. We're just people. Using that sort of argument makes no sense.
and I said this was wrong by saying:
<It does when there are an exceedingly high number of them and growing by the episode.
The point was that super powered beings aren't rare in the YJ universe to the point that they are common enough narrative wise that including so many is a detriment to the story and writing. I used both the JL and the meta trafficking as examples of how super beings are so common and you twisted that in to me saying that the JL should be the focus. Your logic doesn't follow.
>I'll give you that it is a genuine problem that so much happens off screen & the average watcher isn't even gonna know any of these new characters.
thank you. Also, like I said it's not just about what happens off-screen but on screen, the large roster is a detriment since the more time is spread over the characters the less each get this is on top of needing to move the plot along which inevitable results characters just being used as props rather than something that drives the story.

Your logic doesn't follow of making ordinary people sound the same as superheroes in a comic book setting. Even with the surge of meta-humans they don't get any focus. The show has it's groups it focuses on while there's groups in the background doing other things. You only get glimpses of those things so you have a sense of a bigger world outside of the small events you see. If you didn't have that information of a wider world out there, the bits the show does focus on would feel too small & compacted.

I think you're generally right, but The Wire for example had a very large cast, and managed it well enough. Just saying it's possible to balance a cast as large as The Team (what a terrible name) + Justice League + Outsiders + villains. Each season of either series is roughly similar in length, but maybe the hour-long episode format of the Wire helps.
>>1065098
Yes, it focuses on a subset of metahumans. But that subset apparently is still too large for these particular writers to handle and develop proper, IMO.
