Season three is up. Are you gonna watch it or do I have to put you through a damn wall?

 No.1038438

Season 1 was okay, but not good enough to convince me to keep watching. That is the nicest thing I can say about your thread OP.

I'll probably watch it sometime next week. Hope it's still good. S2 was pretty decent from memory.

Is there an actual reason as to why I should watch this? Pros, cons, etc.?

I hate it, It's more nihilistic "Life is hard :'(" bullshit.

It takes place in the 1970's. It relies a lot on the juxtaposition between the "ideal family" tropes (like those in 50's sitcoms) and the reality of the situation. Aging boomer mentality.

It would never work in the current year because:

1) there's no wholesome tropes left to destroy or deconstruct

2) even their squalor is luxury in today's world: the father is a home-owner, is in a stable marriage, has a family with 3 children.

That being said, it's not totally soulless (at least the first two seasons aren't. Don't know about the third). Worth watching if you have nothing better to do.

I know that but to be more specific, shows like married with children at least had fun during these moments to make a joke. F is for family takes these moments to remind the viewers life wasn't fun in which usually takes place when the family prospers in some way. I've watched it until season two and it happens every time.

 No.1038512

It didn't attempt to actively insult me, teach any retarded political lessons, or shove social programming down my throat. Made me at least chuckle fairly consistently. All in all not too bad.

>It didn't attempt to actively insult me, teach any retarded political lessons, or shove social programming down my throat

That it does, it's just more low-key than most other things today. The difference is there's somewhat of an actual show mixed along, and the social agenda sips into the background.

still watchable, tbh, but I'm under no illusion that it's poz-free.

Tough, thinking about it, if it's anything like Star vs the forces of evil, they'll start with a decent enough show, then slowly increase the (poz/show) ratio until it's unwatchable.

 No.1039208

I feel bad that this show isn't getting as much attention as it should. It isn't one of those bullshit low effort things. The writing in it is rock solid and I actually got invested in the characters. I usually really hate family sitcoms and they usually are shit, but this is… different. It feels authentic and is actually funny in a natural way.

And the lolis are great too. Marleen is my fav.

 No.1039212

They're falling into the trap all drama-comedy adult shows slip into of it starts off interpersonal drama/slice of life is the issue then it keeps getting more and more bombastic. Instead of just having Bill fucked by the guy exploding carrying through they just keep piling more and more crazy trauma on him.

And now look the weird neighbour isn't just weird now he's a clothes wearing, home breaking into psycho and the new weird neighbour can't just be in an unfair/one sided marriage that is disapproved of it has be abuse/escalated violence to poisoning/childhood trauma with literal puppy murder shit.

Like they had this gold idea with the perfect psychology mind game if the beautiful room that had typo be torn down. Jesus just let that sit and stew for a season, keep the audience guessing along with the characters for a while. Play up Ngyn Ngyn's misfit into the American life for a while. Nope open wide for cramming of plot plot plot into the last few episodes.

I like the show. Don't love it, but I do hate to see it move from the life is hard, family is hard, and once and a while a big crazy thing happen and send you into turmoil to crazy shit crazy shit crazy shit! I don't quite get what Roxy's arc with the running for council had to do with anything other than Netflix forcing in Current Year shit. I thought the candy/condoms guy and the bar was a much grittier/fitting take on the racism of the day than this weird tagent.

Almost finished it. S3 has been pretty solid over all.

>"I've always hated slavery, but I'd pay to dollar for you, Rosie."

>Otto, the Auschwitz survivor hiding in the attic from that frumpy woman.

>"Come out Otto, I know you're in there."

"This time, I won't go quietly."

Seriously, some of the best jokes are this one liner/small scenes they set up.

Just wanted to post something saying that the writing in this is really fucking solid. S1 goes from late autumn to December of 1973, S2 is January to late Feb of 1974 and S3 is June to September? of 1974. It has been 3 years since the series started and they've packed alot into it.

Another thing is the picking up of small plot points and such. Having seen S3 then go back to S1, the wallpaper in the lounge room for instance was halfway done but I didn't pay it any attention the first time I watched S1. Kevin drowning was also mentioned twice but was given context in S3. Same with Frank's Father visiting for S4. It's these small hooks they've scattered through the story they can reel back in to connect with the main plot.

 No.1051494

Already did…

It's one of those shows I wish would end with an epilogue that shows everybody living a happy life, but my guess its that won't come true (at least not for everybody).

Knowing Massachusetts, these are the things that will happen:

>Frank ends up an alcoholic after running out of money supporting 4 kids, and ended everything with a divorce on the streets basking for money with a harmonica, making up stories about being a Pilot Veteran (probably takes meth too). Nobody's seen him in decades, and they don't want to because he's dead to essentially everybody.

>Sue killed herseft after the emotional devastation a couple of years after the divorce when she realised: "Her life is meaningless, she was born to be forgotten". She took full custody of the children since Frank had "anger issues".

>Maureen tried applying for a [insert expensive university here] tuition in Computer Science, but got rejected due to the ongoing sexism, and worked in a fast food chain harassed every day by her boss until she put a knife through his head and ended up serving a life term.

>Kevin got his shit together, and got a GED. Then he went to work in a mine somewhere in Idaho, and is now the Vice President of the same company, investing a bit in the animation field as well (those 90's MTV Animations).

>Bill is the simplest to describe of them all, he grew up to become "Bill Burr" (and got his gap tooth fixed).

>the 4th kid is waiting to be told…

What do you think? Do you have any other ideas?

 No.1051503

>>1051494

I think it'll continue to be a poorly disguised pastiche of Bill's childhood and nothing dramatic will happen.

 No.1053729

The whole Chet thing was meh. It was obnoxious and I just skipped the neighborhood BBQ episode because of how annoying and awkward it was getting. It felt like a Peggy Hill episode. The ending was fine though. I find it super weird that him being kind of an asshole to his wife is treated so seriously considering how I think it'd pretty common in that era. Nguyen-Nguyen was a good addition. Hope they find a way to keep her around, maybe rehabilitate Chet or something because overall he genuinely seemed great. Except he made Frank super fucking unlikeable.
