I haven't watch the Simpsons since the late 90s or early 2000s but I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything bad about Apu until the controversy. It was always about how terrible the main cast has become being former shadows of their original character development.
I'm not sure how Apu is anymore offensive than the other stereotype characters on the show. Will this embolden other groups to "remove" other undesirable characters from the cast. What's to say they couldn't get rid of Lisa as being a negative representation of feminists, Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel for perpetuating the red-neck stereotype or Chief Wiggum for making the police look bad. I think I mentioned this in a previous thread but I would have done something where I would brutal kill off Apu and have everyone mourn for his character for one episode and in the next episode without alluding to it in previews, make him comeback immediately and surprisingly to the forefront as the main story. Maybe in something off-the-wall that the old Simpson's would have done like a convenience store rival store wars that was happening in India and Apu tells of his mission impossible like adventure to save the Qwik-e-mart in this convenient war zone. Show how badass Apu can be. That is if this idea hasn't already been done since it has been going on for so long. That's a feasible next-step - in a really early season there's that scene where he's at home taking a call and they just drew the kitchen set from the Cosby show and put him in a sweater.
