Sidenote, Korra getting her bending back would have made much more sense if she did it by using the avatar state to access Aang's energy bending (since that's what the avatar state was in TLA - tapping into the power of all previous avatars) and re-bend herself. That actually could have been an interesting plot for all of book 2. She has a goal of unlocking the avatar state so she can bend anything other than air (since presumably she has the previouis avatars' bending) and she has to master it so she can control it enough to deliberately use Aang's energy bending to fix herself.
