Finally got around to finishing this. It was much better than I expected. Half was filled with the usual dumb stuff (most centering around Lotor) but this was probably one of the better seasons in a long time in terms of action. Those last 4 episodes encapsulates the potential the show had from the start and I wish it kept up that pace instead of the dumb roller coaster storytelling that lead up to this point. There were some dumb stuff that happens here and there but the fight choreography, cinematic direction and actual team camaraderie on full display just makes up for the faulty shortcomings that lingered.
First 3 episodes were quite decent, maybe even good but had some technical shortcomings or clumsy writing. Sendak seems like one of the remaining Galra rebels which makes me lament at how terrible those suppose other Galra elites that seemed introduced in the prior season were poorly offed. Could've had more instability in the Galra ranks and forming more factions to take back the Galra empire from Lotor. One of many missed opportunities for this show. Seemed like they tried to give Hunk a leadership plot line with Lotor's nanny but it was just for a joke. The sub plot kind of worked because it was funny.
Sedak destroying the sun radiation blocker left too much room for Voltron to save the station. If he really wanted to kill them, he would have fought till the last minute to make sure they wouldn't recover but whatever. You kind of expect this kind of plot convenience at times. I would have changed the response from the two Galra where one was trying to mutiny and Hunk gives the speech he learned just hours ago. I wouldn't have the Galra instantly work together because he doesn't represent Galra or know of their history from just one lesson and Hunk should've respond by saying in a leader type way that if they don't work together, they'll all die. That is when they should realize their situation and work together for their survival. Shiro having his 2nd or 3rd coma episode and nobody seemingly questioning this by this time is unrealistic. He should've gotten a check up by the 2nd time at the latest. Also, that forced romantic interest of Lance for Allura was not needed or really came too late into the show. I'm sure he showed interest before but it made it seem like this romance blossomed because he saved Allura from the blast and/or was jealous of Lotor having a romantic bond with Allura. Cartoon love triangles are terrible and I don't know why they keep doing it.
We finally get back to Keith and Mommy Galra after how-many episodes? It feels like there was a bunch of episodes in-between after this revelation but now we are getting a follow up to it finally. They pulled the "I can't talk right now" but tell you the story later dialogue for the backstory. The pull this 3 times this season but they make up for this first time by using an interesting way to tell the backstory. While going on this mission will hit them with flashes of the past that they experience. Very good use of technique that ties in with the story. That is followed by a clumsy time dump where they just say that 2 years had passed for them there instead of showing the passage of time happen. They kind of did but they felt the need to say specifically 2 years had passed because they didn't have confidence that the scene displayed 2 years of time passing. Also, Keith gets a cosmic wolf. Okay. Also, following up on that Lance romance for Allura, we get lovey dovey jokes from Pidge and Hunk which, again, seems a little late into the season. Also the mice snitched on Lance to Allura about his feelings.
Then we get the resident D&D episode which is probably one of the best fillers in Voltron in a while. It could fit anywhere but they have a clumsy writing dump that they are doing this to help Shiro who hasn't been feeling good for a while. Which reminds me that Lance kind of dropped that investigation into Shiro from last episode. If they really wanted to help Shiro with D&D, it needed a better framing that this info being presented almost half way into the episode and it was in full D&D mode until that point. I would have preferred a little more trpg references to D&D but you can't expect mainstream shows to be able to pull that off.

Then we get into some of the dumb stuff that happens in the last 4 episodes which were pretty good overall. It finally gets revealed by a surviving Altean that Keith and Mommy Galra find, that Lotor is EVIL. Not any kind of evil but Hitler levels of evil where he apparently has enslaved some Altean's to extract their quintessence and some have died because of it. Side note: the voice acting for this Altean girl was very stilted to me. When this revelation is finally revealed, after a disturbing kiss between Allura and Lotor, Lotor pulls a fucking "I can explain" and I had to facepalm.
I'm sorry but when you are revealed to be fucking Hitler for your past actions, the "I can explain" line will not work. You need leeway to explain a misunderstanding of the situation that other's can't see and there was none. There were 3 witnesses to the misdeeds and at the very least 2 of them can be trusted: Keith, a trusted Paladin and an Altean survivor. When one has witnessed you hiding evidence, there is no leeway that can convince Allura that you're not Hitler, Lotor.
Rightfully so, he gets fucked up for it but Hagar, using Shiro's eyes, has sent in Lotor's bitches to be Lotor's babysitters to get Lotor back. Activate Shiro into evil Shiro to take an unconscious Lotor back. Team Voltron seems dumbfounded by this even though it was obvious from the many episodes of loss of self that Shiro had before. Then there was suppose to be this conflicted moment where Pidge sees Shiro leave, aiming her weapon at him. Seem like there should have been dialogue questioning Shiro but there was not. I guess she wouldn't shoot around him or done something desperate to stop the ship. She saves her stupid actions to save her family instead.
Was there a plan for Lotor's bitches to be with Hagar? Well, apparently not since Hagar's plan for Lotor was a family reunion with her true Altean self but Lotor rejects her calling her a monster. Funny coming from Mein Furher Lotor. Another sidenote: Altean Hagar sounds weird and stilted to me here. Hagar disappears after the attempted gun blast from one of Lotor's bitches and you never see her again this season. Did she not plan for anything else after? Then Lotor reveals that this was all part of the plan and he did not tell the other 2 girls and they readily go back to being Lotor's bitches again. Even they are dumbfounded by their own pointlessness since they switch sides so much they don't know what they're there for.
Keith apparently uses a secret Voltron detachment to get a speedboost alone so he can get through a warp that evil Shiro has taken. We finally are revealed that the Shiro we know isn't a Shiro but one of Many Shiro clones and that the real one died and the one giving that half-assed warning was his spirit within the Black Lion. What follows is probably one of the best fight scenes in the whole series up to this point. Damn good and nothing to complain about. Better use of a flashback at the end than Pidge's use of sparse flashbacks the entire series.

The remaining Voltron team try to fix their crippled ship because of Shiro's virus as Lotor and his bitches race to that Alternate universe gate. They actually deal with the virus with a callback from before. Shocked since they rarely do that and just pull deus ex machina through Allura to get out of a situation. They destroy the gate and finally have a confrontation with Lotor and his bitches. He pulls the "I can explain" thing again. For someone who seems calculated, he undoes his own brilliance every time he is under pressure. Sure, he "saved" the Alteans but his actions with the quintessence concentration camp hardly have a good explanation to them. I know it's suppose to show his hypocrisy and when he gets called out out on it as being like Zarkon by Allura, but he didn't fool me as an audience member as being misguided that the other characters seem to have. If they had somehow used his charisma to willingly have ancient Altean's give their life for their savior, I can see him pulling off that he's doing it for the greater good but he doesn't.
He snaps going into Zarkon jr. mode. Also, he lets out he'll kill the Galra as well so now Lotor's bitches and nobodies bitches, even the blue haired girl that was in on the first plan. They could even have a secret ultra double plan going on since she does the same reaction as the first "betrayal" happened or it could just mean that Lotor's bitches were pointless all along. They get jettison out of their ships so that Lotor can make his own Voltron which was hinted before. Keith uses his new visualizing powers to find the wrecked team to travel back to them. A good callback to Zarkon's power when he was the previous Black Lion user.
Very good fight with uses of long and close battles that show the scale of this fight. Makes me worried that those Galra bitches somehow escaped this unscathed with just a jetpack. After Lotor pulls Scorpions teleport punch move, they think to do the same thing since he can do it, Voltron can as well. Using their sword the cut their way into an epic fight within the quintessence zone. A little cliche but appropriate overload the enemy with more power than they can take so they can stop Lotor since they don't want to face the same fate the Zarkon had here. Fail to save Lotor and escape but got to deal with universal collapse. Sacrifice their ship to save all dimensions but at least they got a pretty diamond out of it. Seems like we can finally mourn for Shiro but wait, we need to take a book from Star Trek this time to save the fujoshi fanbase. Using the mind meld, Allura takes the spirit of Shiro from the Black Lion and gives it to the clone formerly Shiro's replacement and Shiro finally lives up to his name Shiro (White in Japanese). Now they must return home to get a new base for whatever follows next for Voltron: Fujoshi Defenders.
Doubtful that Lotor is dead but I was wrong about Zarkon's early departure. A better season that makes me at least hopeful they'll continue to make the show as good as the last 4 episodes of this season. Could be a fluke and we'll be back to the same old shit. I'm at least hopeful now than other seasons before so i hope they have finally found their groove at this point.

After getting a good nights rest and imagining Hitler Lotor with his wife Eva Braun Allura putting Alteans into concentration camps, I find that I forgot to mention a couple of small things in my usual big post so I'll mention them so I don't forget about them later.
The reason Lotor doesn't tell about his masterful plan which falls apart anyway later in the season is because of Hagar's mind probing ability. Unless she lost this ability after returning to her Altean form, this doesn't explain why he told blue hair Galra because she would have been probed to if Hagar was thorough. She didn't have a plan anyway for that reunion so I guess that just makes her stupid.
I wish they didn't do that kiss because it makes Allura's rage seem like a lover's spat. All her actions are a natural reaction if you found out you had kiss Hitler. Not sure how anyone could be fooled by Lotor's act of kindness. With what they've seen of him before, even if he killed Zarkon, I wouldn't put my trust in him. There were no individual humanitarian actions to win over each member to convince me he had changed. Also, they didn't fool the audience since they made it quite clear that he was up to something at the end of last season. It just took the Hitler's Anonymous intervention to make sure Allura sees the evil in Lotor.
The Shiro hair turning completely white was suppose to show he had overcome his conflicted self throughout the series. Previously he had black and white hair to represent the good and evil, yin and yang of his struggle and his return to life was to show the he had returned to the right path. That we have the true Shiro back now. I'm kind of mad they weren't ballsy enough to give him a proper send off, after he returned to undermine all of Keith's leadership development in a previous season. You can't expect many shows to take risks for their rabid fanbase. Also, the black turning to white or vice versa is just cliche. I did that stuff when I was 12 so I really shouldn't be expect the same level of writing I did back then in something that comes out in 2018. Still enjoyed this season more than most other seasons, regardless of the many gripes I've laid at this show over the many seasons. Maybe it can redeem itself at end.

Finally caught up with the episodes, the last season was great. I like how they improved Hunk and Pidge was great as always.

Looking back at this show in it's entirety I feel like it was fun in the first 2 seasons though it fumbles on after that. Though it's still entertaining. I liked that it was fairly straight forward with the good vs evil thing. Granted the show is more detailed than that but I miss that sort of mentality with cartoons. Having a more positive view of humanity and fighting against some great evil. I know it sounds silly to say that but I like the sincerity of it.

The entire series is hit or miss. Overall I'd say it's average, almost too average. They introduce so many great concepts only to never fully explore them. They talked about how complex the plot was but it never got more complicated than your typical kids TV show, definitely not as complex as Avatar. characters walk in and out on an episode to episode basis, it'd help if any of them stuck around for longer than that, but in some cases it's for the best.

So i ignored this show until I checked out a little bit of this thread 2 days ago, after binging the whole thing here are my thoughts:
I saw a lot of avatar names in the credits and I think it contributed to it being a competent project, it never truly reached amazing but it shows that they know what it takes to put together a functional show. /co/ might disagree but I felt the same way about the dragon prince though I'd say it was significantly worse than this it was still within the realm of avg. Shows should all reach at least the competency of these offerings.
The pacing and the filler was insane, I could never understand why they chose to pace the show the way the did. You get this HUGE cliffhanger or important reveal and then the next episode will completely drop it and there will be a deflated resolution a few episodes later. The D&D filler episode was pure pain for me, I could not give less of a fuck. I feel that filler should emulate tales of ba sing se, a high point of the show that explores showcases what makes the characters great.
The shiro-clone-possession-voltron soul storage thing was retarded nonsense, there was nothing I liked about it and was incredibly glad it was over.
There was no real romance, considering how bad team avatar is at that, I kind of appreciate it but the characters come off as non-sexual entities and the only one who gets married is the homo for diversity points and you never get to see pidge in a dress (outside of the past).
The characters aren't shallow but they aren't that deep, most of their interaction is over the plot and they don't have the same chemistry as the gaang did I'm guessing this was a natural consequence of the HUGE ensemble cast. As far as huge casts go this was the best handled I have ever watched, but it shows the unavoidable problem of not being able to delve to deep into character relations when the story is flooded with them. I think keith lampshades the character problem when he says they're not really friends they're just brought together by the war etc, he's not that far from the truth to be honest.
Lots of shit happens, there's definitely plot and that's good but easily half of the shit that goes down is fairly boring the middle of the show seems to drag on, I was thinking while watching that this show is the opposite of steven universe in that it has tons of plot and little character drama as opposed to tons of character drama and little plot.
Season 7 and 8 are the best imo I have huge boner for humanity advancing after contact with aliens but admiral cunt drove me up the wall. Also season 7 is hands down the funniest due to unintentional comedy, when shiro and sandak fought ontop of the ship while entering the atmosphere and the fucking air was on fire I almost died laughing. And when atlas turned into a mech I almost paused it so I could finish laughing, at least it was cool as opposed to giant blue korra.

What happened to the realities that blinked out of existence and then revived? The previous tenant all died right? I hate when all realities are being wiped out that we never see someone from the endangered realities ever pop in to help out story writers could take a page from crisis on infinite earth and leave it a group reality effort. Villain motivations almost always made sense except for magic ancient space energy turning people evil because the plot demands it, that shit makes zero fucking sense why does it want evil? It would've made sense if those things hated existence itself and tried to trick people into fucking reality up, like an infinite power source that hates you.

Overall a solid 6/10, they violated the rule of one thing follows another and relied too much on 'super deep bullshit to be revealed later' but unlike LOST it still satisfies.
Side note: Why the fuck did voltron ditch the pilots so early? Man those lions got tired of their shit fast the first team got to pilot it for a hell of a lot longer.
