Embled related.

What do you mean by doable?

Do you mean edible? Because if so they're edible, just not something you want to live off for a long time. Generally speaking they're full of preservatives, sugar, fat and carbs, because a soldier fighting a war burns off a lot energy, so you'll get fat easily if you don't work it off and eat these regularly.

As for the taste, it varies from country to country and on personal taste. I personally think as far as something that can be eaten on the field with little prep time they taste pretty good.

As far as actual food goes:

You can do better, and you can do worse.

MREs are useful if you need multi-year shelf stable food that comes with an assortment of stuff (drink mixes, condiments, utensils).

Regular food - even frozen TV dinners - may be less expensive, are certainly more easily available, and probably come in a greater variety.

I suggest getting some canned soup, too - just to break the monotony.
