Every culture in the world believes in spirits of some kind. The idea of being surrounded by omnipresent phantoms that could easily fuck with you or kill you is so horrifying that some people are just too timid to function normally with that knowledge. Same kind of feeling for divine judgement. So to cope timid brains switch to atheist mode where only what is immediately visible exists.

Possibly. But I think it's a lot simpler than that. Most Atheists tend to boil down to one of two categories:

a) "Life and the world seem so random and meaningless and mad and nonsensical, that there couldn't possibly be a God."

or

b) "I want to do whatever I want! I don't want no God telling me what to do. So there is no God!

Or some combination or subtle variation of the aforementioned. (i.e. the "Religion is just a crutch for the weak-minded!" meme is basically just a subcategory of a) )

well the opposite is usually given as eternal torment in hell so i suppose that is why people react in the opposite direction and is probably a element of why atheism is a more of a thing in the west
