The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

>2482 "A lie consists in speaking a falsehood with the intention of deceiving."

What about speaking a truth with the intention of deceiving? Here's a very simple example to illustrate:

Person A is supposed to meet person B at a certain specified time. Person B is waiting, person A arrives 30 minutes late.

Asked by B why he was late, A replies "My bus was late", which is a fact - the bus was 5 minutes late. But the real reason why A was late is that he didn't care a lot about the meeting, so he deliberately left at a time where he knew he would arrive late.

While he spoke truth, it wasn't the truth B was asking for.

Is this a sin? Is it a lie?

When you tell a fully true statement to someone, but the intention of saying it is to hide another fact from them, is it the sin of lying?

If yes, then how do you avoid telling somebody a fact that you want to hide from them (in the case where not knowing won't harm them) without sinning?

Also, what would you say about this passage? I'm not accusing The Lord of lying by any means, but He says He's not going to the feast and then goes to the feast.

>You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.” After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

>However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.

The only answer is not to speak at all.

>When you tell a fully true statement to someone, but the intention of saying it is to hide another fact from them, is it the sin of lying?

From what I understand, it depends whether you have a just reason to be deceptive. If you use mental reservation for an evil reason, or for a neutral one, as your example, it would be sinful. However, you are allowed to use mental reservation if there is a just reason for it, say, saving a life. See: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10195b.htm

>If yes, then how do you avoid telling somebody a fact that you want to hide from them (in the case where not knowing won't harm them) without sinning?

You can always say "that's none of your business" or some more polite version thereof.

Can you cite that passage or did you just pull it out of your ass?

Is a lie to protect someone sinful? Hypothetical example, someone is hiding from a murderer in your house. Woud it be sinful to lie to the murderer so the person hiding is safe?

>Is this a sin? Is it a lie?

Short questions often require big answers. A lie is not a sin by definition, not all deception is evil. You sure know how to explore dangerous territory, for the truth is that it is better not to lie. For many things that are considered a sin, they also can be done in righteousness. Even as God has commanded you to not murder, God himself bestows us with death, yet he is not evil.

Remind yourself that we are no gods, and the law exists not as a testament of what is right or wrong, but as a measure of necessity because we are capable of sinning. A sin is not just merely doing evil with intention, but evenmore so it is often a mistake that results in a tragic outcome. As such negligence is the root of most sins.

Are there moments when lying is considered moral and just? Yes there are, but be careful when you lie for the sake of righteousness. Only if one can prevent a greater tragedy by committing a sin, then one has saved another, but if one sins and it was not necessary, then one has condemned himself.

But really, just stick to the commandments, don't lie.

Sins do not manifest in the mouth, but are from the heart, even if it only enters the mind the sin is still manifest. Better speak carefully then to not speak at all, if people never get to know what you think, then they cannot correct you.
