The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

What are some of the ways we can receive a foretaste of divine union with God? I heard that at the final stage of Lectio Divina we can experience and contemplate God as He is. And others have said that through the Jesus Prayer we can achieve a similar effect. Does anybody on this board have past experiences with this?

There was one time where I fell into despair when I thought about all of the pleasures I would have to sacrifice in order to more fully follow God and I thought of asking on the board "Does communing with God bring joy?" and after I thought this, I felt this radiating light from within my chest. Biologically, we know that the heart is physically somewhat off-center with regards to its position in our chest but the warmth I felt? That was in the true center of my chest, like what artists depict. It was like some kind of light from within. It felt amazing. I didn't even know I had a heart. Not like this, anyway.

I think that was a foretaste of divine union with God. If anyone knows what the term is for this feeling and how to pursue it, I'd be very grateful.

Read the works of Saint John of the Cross and perhaps also Ways of Mental Prayer by Lehodey. As you ascend the ladder of prayer (reaching higher levels) you will eventually experience such a thing.

This is the mystical path that isn't talked about much. For this, please see a spiritual director.

Maybe check out the Communion and Liberation movement. It's all about seeking an encounter with Christ, mostly through your relationships with others.

All things work, but consistency is the key. I've had experiences like this where (describing how it felt) God lived His life in me and I saw the world as He sees it, and I saw Him as He is. The interconnectedness of things, how He is immanent in creation, how even the smallest details like the raindrops on the bus during a storm is a literal masterpiece, how He is "in" people and their connections between each other, how He genuinely desires the salvation of all (a hard truth in reality), etc, etc. Before it I was fasting 3+ days a week, ceased eating meat, ceased unchastity, was praying and writing letters to the Father daily, praying the Jesus prayer, reading the Scriptures, had separated myself from most social connections, was going out and experiencing nature and society a lot instead of being online, and many other things for a period of about 2 months. This experience lasted about 9 days, and it was the purest joy that I could ever have (to the point where I had to ask God repeatedly to stop at times because the physical reaction gained by it was suffocating and painful sort of), and has dimmed the whole world for me. This state was temporary for me since I fell into sin again, but it can be permanent, and is called the "Transforming Union," the highest level of prayer.

From reading about others experiences who have had similar encounters with the Divine Essence (again, describing how it felt, not trying to imply anything heretical), simply do this:

1) Approximate the way life will be in the renewed creation right now, in the fallen one (look to the victorious Christ in revelation, the live the Father lives now, and Eden for instruction), even if it isn't perfect.

2) Do mental prayer consistently, read the Scriptures, separate yourself from man as you can, and pray for union with God.

3) Overcome sins, fast, do daily moment-to-moment prayer and battle against your passions, hide yourself n the Heart of Christ from the Wrath of God and the temptations of Satan.

It'll come eventually.
