The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

>CANT 2:15. Catch us the little foxes that destroy the vines: for our vineyard hath flourished.

>..Catch us the little foxes. . .Christ commands his pastors to catch false teachers, by holding forth their fallacy and erroneous doctrine, which like foxes would bite and destroy the vines.

>JER 10:20. My tabernacle is laid waste, all my cords are broken: my children are gone out from me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

>JER 10:21. Because the pastors have done foolishly, and have not sought the Lord: therefore have they not understood, and all their flock is scattered.

>1 JOH 4:1. Dearly beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits if they be of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

The some of the priests in my diocese do similar stuff, but they always end up tying it into the scriptures we've read that day and bring the focus back to that after any minor diversions. I personally like that they at least try to be relateable to the church goers given that there is quite a degree of separation between the laity and the clergy. Also, they never let any of it get in the way of reverence.

I guess some preachers are just better than others though…

I pay no mind to what Protestant pastors have to say anymore… they're all egomaniacs who spread a false gospel. If you're tired of listening to Pastor Jim's grocery store adventures and flat humor every Sunday, I'd encourage you to come home to Rome. Catholic priests are modest, knowledgeable, and sometimes very based. Case in point:

>be me

>at Sunday Mass earlier this week

>priest is delivering a homily on carrying out God's will

<"Jesus told his Apostles 'Peace be with you. Receive the Holy Spirit. Spread the Gospel to the four corners of the Earth.' etc."

>priest pauses for a brief moment

<"What he didn't say was 'Peace be with you. Receive the Holy Spirit. Now go and be a slut.'"

>a single woman gasping is barely audible

I had a hard time keeping a straight face throughout the rest of his homily. But as >>814136 said, priests generally do a good job of staying on-topic and not creating a barrier between them and the laymen (both of which Prot pastors are usually guilty of).

>But people like Rod Dreher tell me nothing but horror stories about Catholic priests preaching miracle of sharing sermons.

Because they'd rather spend time slandering the church than actually teaching you anything about the scriptures, their meaning in our world, or their purpose in our faith.

Lay Catholics my not have every word of the bible memorized, but we learn scripture in a very intimate manner through the missal and homilies. I would agree with the protestant claim that more Catholics should read the bible solo, but at the same time our preachers are very skillful. Just read the homilies of the church fathers.

My experience with Catholic preaching vs. evangelical preaching is part of what led me to the church. There was so much more passion and insight, and I've yet to hear a Hollie on a Sunday that doesn't speak to me on a personal when I hear it, often to a shockingly uncanny degree.

Protestant preaching and proselytizing is what got me looking into faith. Catholic preaching and interpretation is what got me to stay.I don't mean to offend if I am, but this is just my personal experiance.

>often to a shockingly uncanny degree

This is almost the rule for me. God inspires His priests to give us the insight we need. (The fact that it happens so often with scheduled readings is even more amazing to me.)
