Evangelicalism is the inheritor of historic Protestantism, as opposed to liberal mainline Protestantism. The tipping point occurred between the two camps in the mid 20th century, when most often the less numerous party formed a separate denominational structure to be free of doctrinal inconsistency (see United methodists vs free methodists). There are still debates in denominations about the same issues.
Evangelical is an umbrella term that many denominations fall under. Denominations are usually defined as one organizational structure, "the Southern Baptist Convention", which is part of a certain theological tradition, "Baptist". Each denomination formulates it's particular statement of faith. Local churches are part of denominations. Every evangelical would consider every other evangelical part of the invisible church.
The term literally refers to our practice of evangelism. Evangelicalism holds of first priority the doctrine of biblical inerrancy. See the definition from the evangelical theological society:
>Doctrinal Basis
>"The Bible alone, and the Bible in its entirety, is the Word of God written and is therefore inerrant in the autographs. God is a Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each an uncreated person, one in essence, equal in power and glory."
The ETS should be considered the best group to define what an evangelical is.

In the cultural sense of the word evangelical, a liberal cannot be considered. A Iiberal might be literally evangelical, and even the secular left is called the "evangelical left", but only in that sense.

Evangelicals have held a majority or plurality in the entire history of the US, including today

The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest evangelical body, and sending agency of the largest single missionary body in the world. Evangelicalism is driven by the SBC way more than the non-denoms, who as a joke are always called closet Baptists anyway

While true, this is old GOP political posturing, and not exclusive to evangelicalism. The heresy of Zionism is bipartisan. Really frustrating honestly.
