The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

On the way to begoming here and had a chat with the priest about the patron saints. How does one choose one own patron saint? Shared personality/traits? Inspiration? Based on hope and what one aspire to be? Any recommendations or books I should take a look it?

Also how are the saints are associated with traits? Their deeds in their life or was it later decided by the church fathers and such?

Read the lives of the Saints, eventually one will choose you and you will be filled with the desire to venerate them. Saints are associated by the deeds in their life, sometimes quite broadly (Isidore becoming the patron of the internet for example).

Hi, OP, confirmed Catholic here. I was told to pick a saint. That's it. It can be from whatever I feel the reason can be.

I chose my patron based on the sport I was doing at the time, because I figured that best represented me at the time (I was 14 and not the brightest candle). So I chose Saint Adjutor, the patron saint of swimmers.

At the time that was as much research as I thought was nesscary. Got confirmed and lived the rest of my teenage years as a lukewarm until eventually leaving the church in college (uncoincedentally a liberal arts college, go figure).

Eventually, when I came home to Rome and the fire in my heart was burning brighter, I did actual research on him. Turns out he was a french knight during the first crusade who was captured by mohammedians. They tortured him day in and day out in order to get him to abandon his faith, but he never relented.

The miracle associated with him is related to his escape. Legend has it, God sent two angels to physically carry him out of the tower he was being held in, broke his chains, and cast him into the sea where he than swam all the way back to France. He lived the rest of his life as a hermit.

After finding this out, I felt bad abandoning my faith before. From that point forward I always try to remember to ask Saint Adjutor to pray for me and ask God to shield my heart from the temptations of the world and never lose my faith again.

So I guess my advice to you, OP, choose a saint that best fits you. It can be a patron of [your occupation or dream occupation], it can be a Soldier like St. Gregory or St. Michael to help defend your soul from the forces of evil. It can be a scholar like Thomas or Augustine and ask them to help you in your scholarship. It can be a saint whose life somewhat or completely mirrors your own. It can be a saint from your homeland or not funny enough, I'm not French so seeing my American Bishop hesitate to pronounce Adjutor made me chuckle a little bit when he confirmed me

It's really up to you.

Do you have shortlist of who you have in mind?

A saint you vibe with, pretty much. Primarily, find a saint who has your name, if your name is that of a saint. Secondarily, read the Bible and read up on the lives of the saints and see if there is a saint you particularly like (because of his/her history, works, personality, trials…). Also remember that normally your patron saint must be of the same sex as yourself.

Personally my name is Jeremy, and so my patron saint is obviously Jeremiah. I relate a lot to him, so that's a major plus. Sadly I don't pray to him often enough, although I'm glad my parish has an icon of him painted above the iconostasis (alongside an icon of St Isaiah, St Ezekiel, St Moses, St Elijah, and St Daniel).

When I'm done reading the Bible, I'll focus better on the works attributed to Jeremiah and Baruch (Jeremiah, Baruch, Lamentations, Letter of Jeremiah). After you are baptized/chrismated/confirmed, and therefore given a new name, it would be a good idea to give a particular focus on the things written by your patron saint if he/she left writings behind. He/she is your spiritual authority "from above", after all.

St. Jude comes into my mind, mostly because of his status as the patron saint of lost causes stuck with me. I heard that he was the forgotten saint because he shared the same name with Judas the betrayer; until some churchly scholars tried to revive his name and recognition and they gave him the association of lost cause as in hope shines brightest against the darkest backdrop of despair. My life is a train wreck for a very long time now, despair almost claim me back then so yeah.

Also recently read about St. Monica and St. Augustine. It was inspiring about how prayers can save ones family. I would be devastated if I lose my family and friends to the deception of the enemy and its cronies. I know that I cannot take her name though as a guy.

generally people will choose the saint that shares their name or a similar name from what I've seen, but some people just find a saint that they absolutely love and want them to be their saint. I have a name that isn't shared with any Orthodox saints so I chose st. Seraphim of Sarov, his life and his teachings just really stuck with me. Some people will also chose a saint who's feast day falls on their birthday too.

What I'd recommend is reading about the lives of the saints, you could ask people in your parish about their favorite saints, or read some of the works on spirituality and find a saint who's words resonate with you.

I like St. Jude. I consider him the quasi patron of the chans (the chans and chan culture being a lost cause in of itself).

If you have a shared name, study them

If they are venerated on your birthday, study them

If they are both, that's likely to be your patron already.

If you don't sense a connection to any of those, then look to interests.

I narrowed it down to three, but became certain that a saint who is venerated on my birthday was my patron after I'd made a prayer for him.
