It became popular because Muhammad simply took influence from Christianity. Islam is just a modern example, but remember that the pagans copied us. Islam isn't an "Abrahamic" religion, it's the pagan faith of the Arabs, just as the Imperial Cult was the religion of the Latins of Rome.

He got popular because he appeals to the base desires of sex and power that most pagan men have in their hearts. Promise men can have four wives and murder other pagans in your new religion and you'd be suprised how many sinful men would sign up for it.
