The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Post your favorite quotations from the fathers, on any subject.

>The mere mention of the sufferings that wrought our salvation is enough to quench distress, even at its worst. Those sufferings were all undergone for humanity. Our Lord did not destroy death to make one body victorious over death, but through that one body to effect our common resurrection, and make our hope of it a sure and certain hope. ~ Theodoret

>Repel the assault of sorrow by the thought of Him who wisely administers all the affairs of men, with perfect knowledge of the future and right guidance of it for our good. Let us join in the joy of him who has been delivered from this life's storms. Let us rather give thanks because, wafted by kindly winds, he has cast anchor in the windless haven and has escaped the grievous shipwrecks whereof this life is full. ~ Theodoret

>Let us be spiritually-minded: let us be a perfect temple to God. As much as in us lies, let us meditate upon the fear of God, and let us keep His commandments, that we may rejoice in His ordinances. ~ Barnabas

>The Lord will judge the world without respect of persons. Each will receive as he has done: if he is righteous, his righteousness will precede him; if he is wicked, the reward of wickedness is before him. Take heed, lest resting at our ease, as those who are the called [of God], we should fall asleep in our sins, and the wicked prince, acquiring power over us, should thrust us away from the kingdom of the Lord.~ Barnabas

>No one gives the name of sheep to those who fall in battle with arms in hand, and while repelling force with force, but only to those who are slain, yielding themselves up in their own place of duty and with patience, rather than fighting in self-defense. ~ Tertullian

>Who else, therefore, are understood but we, who, fully taught by the new law, observe these practices,—the old law being obliterated, the coming of whose abolition the action itself demonstrates? For the wont of the old law was to avenge itself by the vengeance of the glaive, and to pluck out “eye for eye,” and to inflict retaliatory revenge for injury. But the new law’s won’t was to point to clemency, and to convert to tranquillity the pristine ferocity of “glaives” and “lances,” and to remodel the pristine execution of “war” upon the rivals and foes of the law into the pacific actions of “ploughing” and “tilling” the land. ~ Tertullian

>It is therefore impious to desecrate the symbol of manhood, hairiness. But the embellishment of smoothing (for I am warned by the Word), if it is to attract men, is the act of an effeminate person, if to attract women, is the act of an adulterer; and both must be driven as far as possible from our society. ~ Clement

>Let us teach ourselves first to walk in the commandment of the Lord; and then our wives also, to walk in the faith that has been given unto them and in love and purity, cherishing their own husbands in all truth and loving all men equally in all chastity, and to train their children in the training of the fear of God. ~ Polycarp

>I also always entreat you, and do not cease entreating you, not only to pay attention here to what I say, but also when you are at home, to persevere continually in reading the divine Scriptures.

>

>

>When I have been with each of you in private, I have not stopped giving you the same advice. Do not let anyone say to me those vain words, worthy of heavy condemnation, "I cannot leave the courthouse, I administer the business of the city, I practice a craft, I have a wife, I am raising children, I am in charge of a household, I am a man of the world; reading the Scriptures is not for me, but for those who have been set apart, who have settled on the mountaintops, who keep this way of life continuously."

>

>What are you saying, man? That attending to the Scriptures is not for you, since you are surrounded by a multitude of cares? Rather it is for you more than for them. They do not need the help of the divine Scriptures as much as those do who are involved in many occupations. The monks, who are released from the clamor of the marketplace and have fixed their huts in the wilderness, who own nothing in common with anyone, but practice wisdom without fear in the calm of the quiet life, as if resting in a harbor, enjoy great security; but we, as if tossing in the midst of the sea, driven by a multitude of sins, always need continuous and ceaseless aid of the Scriptures. They rest far from the battle, and so they do not receive many wounds; but you stand continuously in the front rank, and you receive continual blows. So you need more remedies.

-St. John Chrysostom (although I could pick any number of his quotes, especially on scripture. He always urged reading.. and it's good to show Protestants this has always been done as well)

“Having discovered the tenor of the document [Ecthesis], since by refusing [to sign] they [the legates] would have caused the first and mother of Churches and the city [ecclesiarum principem et matrem et urbem] to remain so long a time in widowhood [i.e. without a confirmed Bishop], they replied quietly: ‘We cannot act with authority in this matter, for we have received a commission to execute, not an order to make a profession of faith. But we assure you that we will relate all that you have put forward, and we will show the document itself to him who is to be consecrated, and if he should judge it to be correct, we will ask him to append his signature to it. But do not therefore place any obstacle in our way now and do violence to us by delaying us and keeping us here. For none has a right to use violence, especially when faith is in question. For herein even the weakest waxes mighty, and the meek becomes a warrior, and by comforting his soul with the divine word, is hardened against the greatest attacks. How much more in the case of the clergy and Church of the Romans, which from old until now, as the elder of all the Churches which are under the sun, presides over all? Having surely received this canonically, as well from councils and apostles, as from the princes of the latter [Peter & Paul], and being numbered in their company, she is subject to no writings or issues of synodical documents, on account of the eminence of her pontificate, even as in all these things all are equally subject to her according to sacerdotal law‘. And so when, without fear, but with all holy and becoming confidence, those ministers of the truly firm and immovable rock that is of the most great and Apostolic church at Rome, had so applied to the clergy of the royal city [Constantinople] it was seen that they had conciliated them and had acted prudently, that the others might be humble and modest, while they themselves made known the orthodoxy and purity of their own faith from the beginning. But those of Constantinople, admiring their piety, thought that such a deed ought rightly to be recompensed; and ceasing from offering them the document, they promised to produce by their own care the issue of the Emperor’s order with regard to the episcopal election. When this was accomplished, the apocrisiarii [representative of Rome in Constantinople] dear to God thankfully returned home’.” (Ex Epistola Sancti Maximi Scripta ad Abbatem Thalassium, PL 129.585-6, taken from Chapman 5)

>church fathers

Matthew 23:9

Go pick up your Bible and stop worshiping men. These "church fathers" were Catholic and have nothing to do with Christianity.

It was the church fathers that collaborated and made the bible you idolize, protanon. It was the church fathers that died and bleed for Christ that built civilization. It was the church fathers that defined the Trinity and fought off life hating heretics.

Your blasphemy spits on their legacy to this day and everything they have ever done for you.

If it weren't for the church fathers, you would be dancing in the mud or submitting to the Mohammedians today. Show some respect.

Don't even bother. They're literal brainlets, who must think the Bible plopped out of the sky.. and the minute the New Testament ended, it was a period of darkness for two whole millenia.. until Pastor Fred showed them the light. There's no gratitude for the Holy Spirit working through history.

>It was the church fathers that collaborated and made the bible you idolize

Well yes, but the first person to list the canon as we have it today was Origen in his homily on Joshua, that's not the best argument for the Church Fathers.

Also, how do you still fall for Baptist shitposting after all these years?

The Church and it's canons were reactive. They didn't set out to make a canon like these heretics. It's BECAUSE of people like Origen, Marcion, Valentinus, etc.. that they eventually decided they had to end the matter, before people followed them instead.

Everything stated in canons are reactive. The church would go about it's business practicing the faith given to them, until every so often some heretic tried to upend the church and caused trouble. Scripture canon, Arianism, iconoclasts, etc.. If people just stuck to the faith like they were supposed to, we wouldn't need to make any of these lists in the first place.

Now fast forward 2000 years and the rest of us have to put up with people who bundle the Church and these heretics together…when that was precisely the opposite.

I'm the anon who called you all brainlets above btw. It seems I can't even follow my own advice to ignore you, but it seems I have to tell you this at least. Maybe you'll learn something…but I'm not going to count on it.

>every so often some heretic tried to upend the church and caused trouble

You mean like how Luther literally did exactly that?

>Scripture canon, Arianism, iconoclasts, etc.. If people just stuck to the faith like they were supposed to, we wouldn't need to make any of these lists in the first place.

Did you even read the Book of Acts? The father of all heretics, Simon Magus, is literally in there. Heretics hate Jesus' Church, even from the very beginning. Just like you hate Jesus' Church and everything it has done for you and your ancestors.

read the ante-nicene fathers, you’ll find they match up pretty well to baptists

-Believers Baptism by immersion

-Faith alone (anti-ebionite)

-All bishops (or pastors) are equal (although some gain power by being intermediaries in church conflicts)

Yeah I'm sure that they also believed that baptism was just symbolic, too. They totally must have been baptists
