Apostasy is a grave evil, even in Christian society. Religious tolerance is simply a codeword for religious indifference. That being said, the Pope's act is similar to when he washed the feet of the migrants—i.e., an act of charitable love irrespective of whether the other person "deserves" it.
Indeed, privately disagreeing with these acts is reasonable given the context.
