The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

There's a man who's been coming to my parish recently and he looks unhealthy, I finally got a chance to talk to him today and found out he's going through a difficult time. He's apparently having a lot of health problems (his skin is discolored and tight against his bones, I don't know what's exactly wrong other than he looks pretty bad and he said he's sick, and he has sleep issues), and his wife left him and from the sounds of things it was bad for him and I think he got divorce raped. He mentioned he's depressed and in despair often. He also hasn't been to church in years and is thinking about staying at my parish.

Aside from being welcoming of him and encouraging him to stay and praying for him, what can I do? I was thinking about finding some prayers to give him, or giving him something like a prayer rope or icon.

I already want to give him a hug. I wish I was good at saying the right words, but I wouldn't know what else to do. Just be his friend.

Get him medical attention.

I don't have money to pay for his medical bills, and I don't have medical training

You could gift him an icon, redirect him to some scriptures, and invite him to the agape in case he doesn't stay after the liturgy.

thanks, today was the first time he stayed after liturgy, hopefully he'll keep staying

Has he met your priest? He would be best qualified for more care.. but like I said, being a friend is a good step. Let whatever come to you as that slowly develops.

I don't think he has, the priest was busy today with some guests from another church, and this is the first time that I've seen him after liturgy

bump for help.

OP here, I'm most likely going to give him an icon of Christ saving Peter in the storm, a book on the Orthodox church that helped me in my conversion, and will give him a few bible verses, does anyone have any recommendations for other verses?

Also please pray for him anons

Hang out with him. Make a barbecue together or something, go to the gym together, just be bros.

NPC view on divorce. Divorce is only acceptable in extreme circumstances like infidelity, and even then it is not required.

he looks ~30 years older than me, but I'll try to befriend him

Get him talking about his life, he may have some interesting stories. He sounds like a veteran.

Don't be disingenuous.
