If you desire a little asceticism, fasting, contemplative prayer and all the usual things should suffice. Unless you have instruction from a spiritual director, or from a priest, more extreme kinds of penances are best left alone.

Remember that masochism is another form of hubris. You are saved by the grace of God, not by impressing Him with mighty deeds.

If you are struggling with sloth, whatever small deeds you can muster will please God. Remember the old lady in the temple giving all she had; the more we give God of what little we have, the more it truly is.

If you are rotting away due to a lack of discipline, establishing a regular practice of prayer is a good first step, even if it is just saying the Our Father before bed every night. As you increase in faith, your works will increase, not vice versa.

I’d say: start with lower forms of mortification (a week without the use of internet, fasting, a whole day off dedicated to prayer, volunteering at a shelter, etc…); if you still feel the need to mortify your flesh even more, speak to a wise priest/minister/pastor and ask for guidance on how to do it properly and not to be “special” on how you humble and subdue your flesh.

I got interested in Catholicism after being atheist and I don't really have intimate relationship with God, but I try to do Father's prayer every day, just becaue I believe it's "right thing to do." I was thinking "fake it till you make it," but I guess it's opposite to what you just said, thank you for introducing me to these ideas.

Yes. That's a red scapular and rosary, crucifix and what looks like holy water - easy enough to get on Amazon. The book is an old Catholic prayer book, replaced by Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, but is still available on Amazon as well. The scourge is a little more difficult. You can make your own - plenty of tutorials out there - or you can special order one from a BDSM shop if you really want to give such a place your money. I'd suggest making your own.
