The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I'm in a tough place. I've gone through a lot this past half year or so, and i decided it's time to reevalute my life and do something else. I went through a rough break up. I dropped out of university. i'm in the process of moving to a new city for a fresh start. i'm lost.

I want to get involved with the church. i haven't gone to church since i was really young so I don't know how exactly to do that or what to do. But i want that sense of community and purpose. am I going to look like a fool for just showing up to a church wanting to join that community? is it worth it? Are they just gonna shoo me away? i wouldn't blame them, i'm just a 19 year old nobody who's been living out of a bookbag and on couches. i just want to help people. maybe that'd make me feel a bit better about myself. I don't want to do a 9-5 grind at a miserable unenjoyable job just to exist. I miss having a sense of community. i don't like loneliness.

this post turned into an aimless ramble. ban me if it's too offtopic or a stupid blogpost. sorry. i just want some guidance. there's a parish near the house i'm staying at tonight, should I go? what do i say to the pastor and such? is this all even worth trying to do?

No absolutely not. You're going to looked at with a sense of awe if anything, a nineteen year old man that's already feeling the call towards God is a great thing.

If you're looking for a community that's great, but don't expect to find people like your self at your age. Remember a community is made up of individuals.

Also, please prioritize theology over a community.

Good luck, you'll be absolutely welcome, however there is a bit of homework attached. As this >>762064 anon said, when it comes to community, good theology helps especially to avoid nuts.

Best thing to do would be to stay towards mainline protestants, Lutherans, Episcopalians, Presbyterians and Methodists, or just become Catholic or Orthodox. A good rule of thumb is that if the church building is traditional looking, the teachings will be reasonable and older. If it's in a gym and they drag out a banjo, you're likely not going to get a good sense of what the religion is.

Anyway good luck in your endeavours
