The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

What's the consensus on giving to panhandlers and other beggers?

It's a moral duty to give to give to folks down on their luck, yes, but I'm afraid I might be feeding someone's drug or alcohol addiction or unwillingness to work. It's no secret that many panhandlers are addicts and/or workshy and these people need a different kind of help than my loose change.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, am I guilty of sin if I give to a panhandler and they use the money I gave them to buy drugs? Or if I give to someone who's lying about their horrible situation and abusing the compassion of their fellow man? I don't mind giving money to those in need, but I want to be sure my money is going to feed a person or family that needs it, not on drugs or frivolities.

The age old "WWJD?" question comes to mind here, and I think in situations such as this, he'd rather cure them of their addictions than give them money. But maybe I'm misunderstanding Christ and some more knowledgeable Anons could give me insight.

Small anecdote from when I was younger. I started working in a gas station in a run down ghetto and there old black woman would panhandle for money outside. I gave her some money in my first encounter because she told me a story about her friend who was struggling to feed 5 children. However I saw her outside again another day, this time giving a completely different story, this time about how she needed bus fare to get to work. Some customers who were far more familiar with the area than my naive upper middle class white ass, told me how she does this all the time and how she spends the money on crack cocaine. I felt cheated and hurt, and disgusted that I was supporting such a harmful habit.

About a month after I stopped working there, I caught wind about how the police had picked her up when she was doing her daily hustle and she was going through rehab. This I think is a greater charity to individuals such as this than giving them money will ever be.

What are your thoughts /christian/? Yes or no to panhandlers?

Just head to homeless shelter or retirement homes if you want to help people.

give them non-monetary aid that cannot be transferred into drug currency

This implies I carry household items around with me all the time and that I have time to take this person to a store.

They often locate themselves outside shops - if those shops sell food, buy them such.

If you think someone is genuinely in need of money for living purposes, then give whatever you feel like giving. God loves a cheerful giver.

Though, if you are under the impression that they will use that money for something that's bad for them or for something sinful, then don't give them money. I'm pretty sure that giving them money, knowing that they will use it in such a way that will worsen their situation, is sinful.

You can, however, give them something better than money: the gospel. I suggest to prepare yourself to personally share the gospel with beggars, to make gospel tracts and to hand them out, and to buy a few extra Bibles for the sole purpose of giving them away to whoever is interested.

There is no consensus. See: >>747616

Give them what they can and say "Blessed are the poor in spirit for yours is the kingdom of heaven.". Offer to pick them up and take them to Church next Sunday. If they say no, that's ok. If you see them again do the exact same thing. Just as it's their choice to buy drugs with the alms you gave, so is it their choice to choose salvation; at least someone presented the option.

Church is for the sick in spirit, don't be wary to bring an ill person to the hospital.

>What's the consensus on giving to panhandlers and other beggers?

entirely mixed, but most people here wouldn't

in fact, I'm inclined to think most people here would tell them to go get a job.

Personally have – especially in the USA where having a bad back can put your entire family out on the street – but also haven't on account of this one guy got too dependent on me and stalked me each day looking for more.

So, yeah, mixed …

I do give to local charities, though, as compensation.

>implies I … have time to take this person to a store.

No, after all, I get it … you're far too busy praying for opportunities to do "good works" than to actually DO any of them …

There will always be poor, hungry, and sick.

Contribute to greater glory rather than throwing money into a fire.

I give if I can, but never that much.

Who knows what their stories are.

Nice assumption. Since we're playing this game I'll also assume you let every homeless man standing at an intersection into your car and personally drive him to the shelter.

I am not against helping those in need, but I am skeptical of unintended consequences and enabling.
