The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I'm wondering about self flagellation. What is some good reading to do on the subject? I'm considering practicing it as penance, and to stave off temptations. New advent's page doesn't offer any instruction on the practice, Sensus Fidelium doesn't offer instruction, and google just has lame "journalism" instead of any practical information.

Also, has any one practiced this? I would like to hear about your experience if they feel comfortable sharing.

Your body is a temple, anon. Harming yourself wont make it stronger.

Think about it this way. Would striking the walls of your Church with a hammer make it stonger or would it chip away the stability?

Mortification is still an indispensable Christian duty.

No no … I knew FM were still around, but - here in the US at least - the United Methodists are what most people see when they think "Methodist".

That's ok. The UM serve a purpose.

I practice regularly. I could say a lot on it but Ill try be brief.

Don't see it as penance anon. The whole goal of it should be working toward not sinning, and therefore not having to use the whip. You should be doing an examination of conscience every night. During this, pick a particular nasty habitual sin and assign yourself a number of lashes (5-15 is pretty decent imo, depending on how badly you failed). Do them while meditating on those particular sins, you could also pray eg. I do "Sacred heart of Jesus, have mercy on me" and whip at "mercy". Do not go overboard with it. The next day focus on that same catagory of sin. Make sure you pick one sin and remove it through this method, then move onto the next.

It's all up to you though. If it doesnt improve anything over a week, maybe stop or try altering a bit. Personally with this method Ive been able to stop a whole number of sins. I managed to stop pretty much all pornography within 4 days.

As for the type of whip, I just use a bit of rope Ive tied a knot in the end. It just needs to be enough to sting, but you definitely dont want to do any damage to your body.

>The whole goal of it should be working toward not sinning

This is the point of it. A lot of people see mortification through the eyes of that stupid Dan Brown movie where that albino monk tore up his flesh. That's not what mortification means. Mortification is a means of embracing the Passion and getting closer to, but not becoming Christ.
