It has been my experience that such a conviction will come naturally, if you are honest in your regret for the sin you did in fact commit. Use the Jesus Prayer and continue in your repentance, and contrition (which, according to the council of Trent, is the gift of God) will surely come.

According to the aforementioned council, imperfect contrition (penance out of the fear of Hell) is, while not as desirable as perfect contrition (penance out of love of the Lord), still legitimate repentance, and can open the sinner's heart to perfect contrition.
