The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Fellow /christian/s,

What does one do when they have a recurring sin they wish to stop committing because it offends God (the nature of which is not important - let's say it's sexual and leave it there), but in the heat of the moment, you rationalize or minimize what you're doing and wind up sinning again and again?

Prayer is the big one, naturally, but what else could I be doing?

Putting this another way - I understand that true repentance requires a conviction to not sin again.. but I truly in my heart of hearts do not have that yet.

The fear of having to go to confession again is closer to me than the fear of god. I understand that's a personal failing, but it's a failing I want to correct.

>I understand that true repentance requires a conviction to not sin again.. but I truly in my heart of hearts do not have that yet.

It has been my experience that such a conviction will come naturally, if you are honest in your regret for the sin you did in fact commit. Use the Jesus Prayer and continue in your repentance, and contrition (which, according to the council of Trent, is the gift of God) will surely come.

>The fear of having to go to confession again is closer to me than the fear of god.

According to the aforementioned council, imperfect contrition (penance out of the fear of Hell) is, while not as desirable as perfect contrition (penance out of love of the Lord), still legitimate repentance, and can open the sinner's heart to perfect contrition.

Unpopular opinion but flagellation helped me as well
