The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Please, could you explain what is the protestant work ethics?

How is that works?

And what is the catholic and orthodoxy churches ethic?

Also, could you guys tell me the virtues a good christian should have It?

Something like The prussian virtudes.

29cf7c  No.742004

"You don't work, you don't eat" is the common protestant trope regarding labor now days.

But originally protestant work ethics was kind of glorifying the common people and was opposing Catholic view on sainthood hierarchy, because not everyone can be a priest or a monk, so the reformed crowed empathized that whether you're working in a farm or a bakery, your productivity can be holy in the sight of God (even if the pope is disgusted).

The result was, of course, eventually the rise what we call 'the industrial and scientific revolution'.

>Also, could you guys tell me the virtues a good christian should have It?

The four cardinal virtues. From St Augustine:

For these four virtues (would that all felt their influence in their minds as they have their names in their mouths!), I should have no hesitation in defining them: that temperance is love giving itself entirely to that which is loved; fortitude is love readily bearing all things for the sake of the loved object; justice is love serving only the loved object, and therefore ruling rightly; prudence is love distinguishing with sagacity between what hinders it and what helps it. (De moribus eccl., Chap. xv)

Bigger focus on making money than family.

As in, you work to get money and not because you have to.

This opposes the traditional understanding of economics that profit is secondary to Ethics, this is why Orthodox and Roman Catholic only started ignoring Usury later on.

It stems from the sola fide. If everything you do is justified by faith alone, then you can justify being an extreme capitalist by saying you believe in Jesus Christ so this must be what he wants. Hence why good works are inexorable.

>protestant work ethic

<it was declared a heresy by lazy cucktholics

<look up "Americanism", apparently they expected the faithful to die rather than work hard

<this concept is further showcased in the cultural differences between cucktholics who tend to identify with communism, and Protestants who believe in freedom

<this is why the US has been to moon and more while yurop cant even support their own military

If youre talking theologically, may want to be clearer next time

>Works doctrine

<I can donate, volunteer, etc till i work myself to the bone

<it will never be enough to save my soul

Faith leads to works and repentance; faith, works, and repentance all together are true fruits of Salvation. Without all, you are lost.

Just usual protestant lies.

Prot work ethic is Germanic work ethic. Or are Bavarians and Austrians lazy now?

It also came from the medieval church re-orienting Germans to a 'work and pray' ethic as opposed to previous 'hunt and kill' mindset… but somehow prots will take credit for this now.

Also the populations that came from the classical world (sth europe etc) had a different attitude to menial labor i.e. it was a slave based society. It's been harder for christianity to completely change that mindset.

Oh and you can also ask why American Blacks don't seem to have 'muh protestant work ethic' when they're all prots. Hmmm, maybe it's an ethnic quality, not a religious one.

I read Max Weber's essay and it was apparently a thesis on how Protestantism, mainly Calvinism, created the modern capitalist order.

Found archived reply I made on /his/ on the subject.

To quote Weber he said that Catholics prefer the sort of training that a humanistic gymnasium affords i.e. muh boxing, muh sports.

He said Catholics are more inclined to work in a more "traditionalist" manner as he described, laboring solely to satisfy one's needs whereas according to him the capitalist ethic demands the making of profit for the sake of making profit.

Perhaps this is what's behind the habit of living by paycheck to paycheck and may be influenced by religious ideals of humility.

Catholics were also said to have a greater tendency to become master craftsmen in single trades while Protestants appear to prefer quantity over quality with their specialties. This might explain the lack of quality in some Protestant trades when compared to the same when done by Catholics with things like cuisine and arts to give an example.

So overall what could deduced from all this is that a greater cumbersomeness by Catholics might permit them to produce things of higher quality although inefficiently while the the practical essence of Protestants allows them to manufacture more but at potentially lesser qualities like with Chinese production.

Now going back to the current post here's one bit from the actual text.

Christian asceticism, at first fleeing from the world into solitude, had already ruled the world which it had renounced from the monastery and through the Church. But it had, on the whole, left the naturally spontaneous character of daily life in the world untouched. Now it strode into the market-place of life, slammed the door of the monastery behind it, and undertook to penetrate just that daily routine of life with its methodicalness, to fashion it into a life in the world, but neither of nor for this world.

Another thing which he talks about is how Protestants would use how well one is doing in life as a way to analyze one's state of grace. Perhaps I did not understand it exactly as it was intended but it seems to me that this might mean that some people would because of this try their most to exhibit such signs.

Also the freeing up of people from feast cycles made them devote more time to working and Protestantism is said to have spread among a literate middle class bourgeoisie.
