The funny thing about the witch burnings is that they were more common in the Renaissance than in the Middle Ages. Witch hunting, in Europe at least, was a pagan tradition, not a Christian one. The Romans used to slaughter hundreds of them at a time. When Europe became predominantly Christian witch hunts grew less and less common in all but the most rural areas of the continent, as many of the Church Fathers taught against things like that. It wasn't until around the 14th century that the people began to go after witches because they found out that their rituals involved child sacrifices. The reason I find this all so amusing is because it happened right around the same time as Europeans began to resurrect pagan education(aka the Renaissance.) It even began in the same place too, Italy. It's ironic that the pagan tradition of witch hunting just happened to be revived at the same time and place as pagan education.
