From my understanding it's okay if it's your wife. The real question though, in my mind at least, is the case of sodomy (non-vaginal intercourse) in marriage. I try my best to avoid it, which is easy because my wife isn't really into it anyways (non-vaginal intercourse I mean).

I've always wrapped that in with Sodomy to be honest. That said though I am guilty of initiating that before, though I refrain from it now. The argument could be made that it helps prep the vagina for traditional intercourse better. I've had the same question about using my hand to accomplish the same thing.

You can look at it this way - lusting after a stranger is purely sexual and selfish - you have no connection with that person, you have no real desire to fulfil her needs or to cherish her, you don't want to procreate with her, you don't love that woman in the way that you love your wife. If you had sex with her, it would only be to gratify your own desires. You are viewing that woman as an object to be used in order to please yourself.

Now that doesn't mean that you cannot have sinful fantasies about your wife - you'll have to examine your own thoughts and feelings, if you have such fantasies then obviously I don't want to know the details, but you should be able to logically conclude whether or not they are sinful. Ask yourself: are my fantasies about my wife purely self-serving? Do they degrade my wife?

How do we know that the common viewpoint on Matthew 5:27-28 is irreparably in error? Well, if the greek term "gunh" meant "any woman" and we take the greek meaning of the term "lust" (which means any desire in general), we discover the passage to be saying literally, "whosoever looks at a woman and desires her has committed adultery in her heart". Which means you literally can not desire any woman in general and would have to conclude that all men have sinned being in any relationship with a woman, even if they had the most innocent of "desires".

In Catholic moral theology, the Wife is actually the only woman you may licitly desire. "Chastity", within the vocation of marriage is considered to restrict all pangs of the body's appetite purely to your wife.

Abstinence on the other hand, is a purposeful fast from sex, which is considered very holy, but also a bit dangerous if both spouses are not predisposed to it.

Jesus makes this very clear; you're a sinner if you even think of sinning, if you even feel the desire to sin. You're a sinner if you fail to love your neighbor as you love yourself. And so on. Humans are probably not capable of freeing themselves from sin.
