The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I'm paraphrasing from something I heard elsewhere. Basically, a lot of people say that those who discovered the one God outside of a Christian context (for instance, the Monad of Plato, or the Great Spirit of the American Indians) are better than the outright pagans because they discovered there is one God, they just don't know his attributes. Basically paganism is inherently worse than non-Christian monotheism; a sentiment that I've heard on this board before. However, I heard somewhere, I can't remember where, that that's not true and it's just a Muslim meme. Basically, Christianity emphasizes the fullness of God and his attributes, but Muslims emphasize this autistic fixation on monotheism that makes them rank people in this weird way. The justification was James 2:19: You believe that there is one God; you do well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

What does Christian think of all this? Does anyone have any good saints or historical Christian thinkers who spoke on this subject?

Anything that acknowledges angels or demons with significant power is henotheist not monotheist.

I'm interested in the topic, because I do believe that all the pagan cultures had some flawed awareness of God the Father, inherent to our souls due to being his children. Remember Acts 17:23 and the monument to the Unknown God at Athens.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unknown_God

If you look at the roots of words like Jupiter, Dyeus Pater, "Sky Father", you see cognates all throughout Europe and in the peoples of the Indian Subcontinent. I don't think we need to bother with any sort of autistic "ranking", anything short of the fullness of the Truth is short of the fullness of the Truth, and it seems practically every culture on Earth had some conception of God the Father in their own flawed way, with many even having similar messianic stories. This is why we can say all of paganism was an anticipation of Christ.

I believe that even though the Israelites in particular were chosen by God to usher in the Messiah, all the peoples of Earth, or most of them anyway, had some form of understanding within their souls simply by way of being children of Adam that God the Father exists and is the supreme God who would come again. Remember, even the Israelites took time to develop the understanding the God the Father isn't just the supreme God among many, but that he is the only God. Their conception of him was disordered before his continual revelation as well. So why try to rank the pagans and the other religions? They all practiced according to their understanding, according to what was revealed to them or whatever they knew in their souls which had been corrupted over time.

I'm sure there are many flaws in this assessment though, as I am smol brains.

At two points in history everyone believed in the true God. The true God is the one and only God. Monotheism is a good barometer to measure how far a nation has fallen away from what was once understood by all and gradually was forgotten in nations that God didn't reinforce. For instance in India right now they have a complete garbage polytheism, even if there are modern attempts to disguise that, but from my readings of the Upanishads it seems that at one point they still had a greater understanding in the oneness of God and faiths effect on ones salvation, but even back then it was already significantly damaged

I agree on principle but it also sounds a little ecumenical so I'm wary. In the end it doesn't really matter because everyone meeds to accept Jesus Christ.

Yes, I'm a monotheist. I also believe in one God.
