Constant prayer, meditate on the good things of life:
>Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Philippians 4:8
Keep sinful impulses at BAY. Giving in to impulse gives us the impression that we can never leave our sin behind, which will beget despair. This is a lie – pray constantly – keep God on your mind at all times, live with industry and discipline. When you see a beautiful thing, just think "God made that" and be amazed that he's such a skillful artist. When you're having a good time, step back for a moment in silence, detach yourself from the moment and THANK GOD that he gave you such a memory, and walk with all gratitude for all that he's done.
Here is a good audiobook that might help you, the Art of Divine Contentment: https://librivox.org/the-art-of-divine-contentment-by-thomas-watson/
Exerpt from that Book which is very helpful:
>O what a sin is unthankfulness! it is an accumulative sin. What Cicero said of parricide, I may say of ingratitude: “there are many sins bound up in this one sin.” It is a voluminous wickedness; and how full of this sin is discontent? A discontented Christian, because he hath not all the world, therefore dishonours God with the mercies which he hath. God made Eve out of Adam’s rib, to be an helper, but the devil hath made an arrow of this rib, and shot Adam to the heart: so doth discontent take the rib of God’s mercy, and ungratefully shoot at him; estate, liberty shall be employed against God.
Thankfulness and gratitude for what God gave you today shall help you against despair, and then constant prayer, which should permeate every facet of your mind. Despair is pretty much the final stage before giving up, it is a lie that is beget from out of a thousand other lies. You CAN conquer your bad impulses, you CAN improve in what is noble, petition God for it, and seek him, he will give you what you really desire. Where men failed you, he will NOT.
